Since I've decided to do some testing with KVM in place of VBX and especially VMW and throw in testing out 26.04 since its sort of the last hurrah party for me and KDE, it appears...
But somethings I am running into v. BARE v. non KVM which might appear to be "bugs/issues" in something, but may not be... so
KVM Networking - Bridge
Ok.. its not setup by default and not the default either.. Its not the default in the others either, but its a simple change....
NO, I don't mind doing some setup, on something with CLEAR CONCISE CORRECT INSTRUCTIONS. I've tried various things, and basically it leads to at best a "partial" bridge...
In that the VM's can be "bridged" but the HOST looses its LAN connection
WTF? ? ? ? ? I tried this:
https://www.tecmint.com/create-netwo...dge-in-ubuntu/
Which is the ONLY one that got me to PARTIAL BRIDGE, ie: VM's. Host gone. If I reconnect the LAN port on the host, the BRIDGE dies! Sigh,...
Again, I am not opposed to setting up something with CLEAR CORRECT INSTRUCTIONS! I don't do networking in my sleep.
Any one got any ideas on this? I don't care how, just clear instructions on doing it, please.
Note: YES bridge-utils was installed as part of the KVM incantation.
KVM Networking - NAT and possibly even more net stuff v. bare or others ?
Ok.. one of the first things I do on any install is switch to LightDM and edit it to have XDMCP enabled, along with Remote X11 via SSH etc.. so I do that, install xserver-xephyr... fire it up like always to test, (YES there was a reboot, I've never had restating LightDM enable XDMCP correctly, so I just reboot).
Xephyr -retro -screen 1368x768 :1 -query IP/host
I did it by IP, NAT LAN One, localhost, 127.0.0.1 , and NADDA. Just the standard X11 hash background (ie: retro)
I did this on VMS of 25.04 25.10 and 26.04, SAME results, no joy.
Rinse to BARE METAL... WORKS. Same distros and other everything from 14.04 to 24.04 INTO those on BARE METAL WORKS. So its not LightDM, X11 etc.. its something in KVM.
Doing 127.0.0.1 or localhost should work barring anything or sort of networking issues.
I tried even from VM to VM on the NAT network , no joy.
I can SSH between VM's on the NAT network, I can even SSH into a VM from the HOST (since it has some secret pipe into the NAT network) fine.. I tried routing things from my regular LAN to the HOST to send down that secret black hole, and either the router is not doing it or the host isn't, so I am not going to add a failure point into things.. I did pretty much the same in the past for LXC's and that was fine, but those are all just "server" installs they have NO GUI at all, I've considered doing X11 in the LXC's in the past, but always just went back to XDMCP or remote X11 to do my "X in."
I checked the GUI about firewall in "System Settings" it shows DISABLED. So ? ? ? ? ?
Any ideas on what secret networking things might be blocking port 177 ? ? ? ? Or Bueller?
KVM Graphics
I don't want to report issues in X11 on 26.04 when I think its related to KVM, or possibly virt-manager and viewing the console. I can't get virt-viewer to run, its just is stuck at asking for a password, and actually it crashes the TTY that I start it on normally at this point, if you break out of it... This seems to be a prevalent issue, and YES ALL INTERFACES is enabled for the VM, no joy on that change. Any one got a solution to the virt-viewer thing, so it can run outside that.. I am all for it.. This for boxes which are NOT the KVM host. I tried on several different ones just adding virt-manager and viewer and same results. These "viewers" do not have KVM installed.
Example: Edit the Konsole profile edit the transparency setting. the slider does NOT MOVE when changing the setting, but if you click about where you want it hit, apply, and go back in does work. Bare metal this is not present.
So this is something in KVM? Virt-manager? ? ?
I had some other glitches in things, that I am going to right now chalk up to 26.04 being alpha.
But what exactly is KVM "emulating/mimicking" for video? ?
I don't see these in bare metal, or others.. unfortunately, I don't have too much spare stuff to use to test with other ie: VBX, for one its way under powered for it, I tried it that was a worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. which is weird as I used that same machine with VBX 6.?? something for testing purposes, and it was fine (This is the oracle builds, NOT the repo ones both ways. ) I can use it for bare metal, but I don't have a good way to image these and go back and forth, hence the idea of VM's... but I think KVM might be introducing something that other VM's don't or bare doesn't either.
Since using VBX on that one thing is hopeless I might just use it for baremetal testing, and see how things go.. I've got things on the KVM box, which is far more powerful 8C/16T, v. 4/8 but years older, set pretty well, and since just grabbing more NVME or SSD drives is no longer possible cheaply thanks to the AI bubble.. can we pop that thing already!?

I am really just after some insight here on this mode in KVM, and before I report any issues, try it on baremetal v. VM..
My #1 goal is really to get KVM to Bridge Network and the HOST to have a LAN connection too.
So any insights on this would be great. Thanks!
