will pass by the Earth at about half way between the Earth and the Moon, so it is no danger.
However, I wanted to track it so I opened https://www.minorplanetcenter.net/iau/MPCORB/NEA.txt in my browser, clicked "Select All" on the Edit menu and used the Copy button. I opened Kate and pasted that info into the editor and saved the results as NEA.txt.
I opened Stellarium and went to the plugins configuration setting. Choosing "Solar System Editor" I hit the Configure button and on that dialog chose the middle tab. From there I hit "Import MPC orbital elements". From there I chose the option to import the TLE elements from a file and pointed to my NEA.txt file. After about 3 minutes the button was active again. I saved the settings on the Main configuration windows. I clicked the search button and and entered "2010 WC9" and was taken immediately to that asteroid. One problem, my FPS dropped from between 100-200 down to 5-6 FPS. The NEA.txt (NearEarthAsteroids) file had over 17,000 TLE entries. I looked for a way to mass delete those entries but couldn't find one, and I wasn't going to delete them one at a time. So, I closed Stellarium and did "sudo apt purge stellarium". When it was done I opened Dolphin and deleted the ~/.stellarium directory.
Then I opened the NEA.txt file in Kate and copied the single line for 2010 WC9 and put it alone into a text file I labled 2010WC9.txt. Then I re-installed Stellarium and imported that single 2010WC9.txt file. My FPS stayed at between 100-200 (depends on the zoom) and I could track 2010 WC9. It is supposed to make its closest approach at around 5 PM CST today.
