I have been reading the Distrowatch pages and notice that kubuntu does not do well in the ratings. I wonder why it appears to do less well than many other disros?

Because the Page Hit Rankings don't mean much and can be easily manipulated by zealots, as is often the case. A better metric is the OS of the visitors to that site.
