Not trying to discourage you from having fun, but Trusty -> Utopic, then adding the Next PPA never resulted in a working desktop for me.

I tried that last night. The upgrade with the next PPA went fine, but all I get is a black screen on boot ( I chose sddm at the prompt).

I am not sure if you are having the same problem that I am having with Utopic, but I can only get my system to not have a black screen is to choose the recover mode boot option and then select resume.

If this doesn't work, I certainly hope you can find some way to get your system back again.

After Saturday's updates I couldn't log in on Neon, after this morning's (Sunday!) updates Neon is working again.
Something you should try?

No problems logging in for me.
However, some apps, but not all, that put icons in the system tray when they start up fail to do so because they can't "see" the system tray. But, the continue on and work OK.

System tray, today after some photography I needed to upload a few GB to Dropbox and realised KDE5 doesn't yet have a Dropbox icon.
Just starting it from the CLI worked fine.
The network widget misses a graph for network activity but Conky told me when upload was done.

Maybe twice a day I see a pop up that the Shell has crashed but no reporting mode is available, this will make the panel disappear but after a few seconds it auto-restores.
Otherwise things seem to be reasonable stable but it's still missing a lot of utilities.

A nasty little incident with neon and Firefox.

The update of Firefox 31 came while in neon, when I logged in to the normal Plasma desktop Firefox had forgotten my last session.
In other words, session restore no longer worked.

I checked various reports of similar but non of the remedies worked.
Until I read that in Firefox 31 the sessionstore.js has been depreciated for something else.

So I looked into ~/.project-neon5-kde/cache/.mozilla//firefox/mycode.default/ and found a new directory called startupCache.
I copied it into my original .mozilla profile and all was well again

Glad you got Firefox to work again. I have not had the problems that you are experiencing. My biggest problem with Firefox is related to flash not working correctly particularly on Australian iview. I have found a solution which works on my 14.04 system. I have installed the packages

adobe-flashplugin
pepperflashplugin-nonfree
freshplayerplugin

Unfortunately freshplayerplugin is not available on this system. So I am limited in this regard.

I am still patiently waiting for widgets to be fixed. Every time I get the 83+ updates, my first action is to test the analogue clock. So far it always mis-behaves the same so it gets deleted. The number of widgets is still very sparse and the extra panel that I have installed with the option that Windows can cover always disappears when no window is covering it.

This is a consequence of Living on the Edge.

Konqueror is still too unstable to be useful. FF appears to run as usual, as I am using it now from Neon5 to post this msg.

Did anyone get the hotkeys to work?
Like I'm used to Meta+T to start up Thunderbird and I rely miss this option.

When I set such a short cut and click on Save all seems to go as expected except the progress bar shows 0% before it closes.

Yes, I get the same as you regarding HPLIP failure as shown in the attached graphic



I have been able to configure the printer and it works. So you should be able to print all your favourite documents and pictures.

It will be great when all these interface features work. I often wonder what all the updates are fixing when I constantly see no improvement in the widgets and other panel features and behaviour.

I am sure the developers are doing the best they can as what they are involved in is a massive undertaking and they are currently at KDE Plasma Version 5.1.0.

Ya, printing is no problem, and the HPLIP menu option still gives access. I got to thinking ... (uh oh!) I rarely use the HPLIP system tray icon, I might as well remove it and not waste the CPU cycles testing it in the event loop.

I've also added the PPA. Everything so far is okay except that Power Management in Settings does not work. Screenshots will show a lot better than I can explain.



As you'll see in the next screenshot, PowerManagement IS running.



Should I wait hoping that an update will fix this or is there someway to fix it now?
