IIRC, for those who aren't aware, a year or so ago Fewt (a.k.a Andrew Wyatt) quite trying to port his two Windows based .NET system tray utilities to Ubuntu's EeePC Netbook addition (Eeebuntu) using Mono, and blamed Ubuntu for all of his problems. He stripped more than 800 msgs from that forum before he left. When I posted a mgs on this forum criticizing his anti-Linux ranting he countered with a few dozen diatribes here, but later deleted all of them. Fewt subsequently replaced the EeePc tray utiltiies with Jupiter. Fewt describes Jupiter as

Jupiter is the awesome power applet. It will change kernel parameters between battery and AC modes to use less power without sacrificing performance while plugged in. It also provides rotation of the mouse with the screen and a lot more.

After he purged his postings here he continued to post anti-Ubuntu/Linux rants at various other places around the web. Last December, for what ever reasons, he still described himself as the Resident hum{o,ou}rless linuxhater of the linsux. , but I stopped following his rampage.

Contrary to what zlow might think concerning the name (Fuduntu) it appears that, to quote a line from a famous movie, "Maverick has re-engaged!"

While Fewt could have named his new distro "Feduntu", it looks like an excellent amalgamation of Fedora and Ubuntu primarily for, if I am not mistaken, netbook PCs. For a Gnome DE distro it is the best looking I've seen, although that could be just wallpaper deep. I downloaded it and will try it out on my wife's new Acer Aspire One 521 netbook which, BTW, is an awesome little box.

Fewt's next release, 14.7,

... has been granted redistribution licenses for Adobe Flash, and Fluendo MP3. Starting now, Fuduntu users can enjoy Flash and MP3 playback with this mornings updates. Expect out-of-the-box support starting with 14.7.

Unless those "grants" were freebies it means that either Fewt is eating the costs himself or Fuduntu 14.7 will cost the user something to download and install it. It will be interesting to see how he will do that and still prevent users passing the Fuduntu 14.7 ISO around.

Well, I downloaded the Fuduntu-14.6 iso, burned it and checked it:

I decided to download and try it too and while it was a little slow after the initial countdown, after a few seconds of "_ " it booted up just fine for me.

mmm... I downloaded the i386 version too, and it tested OK on both the ISO and the burn, but it would not boot either. So, on my notebook, those two DVD burns are 0 for 2 on booting. However, I am going to give the 64bit ISO a try on the Samsung external USB DVD/CDROM drive that just came via UPS earlier this evening.

i386 edition burned and booted OK on a few computers. Had a "_" on the one of them but it kept booting about 5 seconds later.

Don't know how it was done, but given the 'friendly debate' that generated between Fewt and GreyGeek, there is probably a subroutine in the boot process that is able to identify the person who downloaded/is installing the distro, and if that person is GreyGeek, 'don't install.'

That you did (which I never claimed) or did not tell me what you think about the name Fuduntu isn't the point of that paragraph, but I'm sure you knew that. The point was that Fewt hit a low spot and was obviously down on Linux, but now, almost a year later, he's released his own Linux distro. I find this to be a remarkable turn-about, and raises all sorts of questions about the sincerity of his previous anti-Linux rants. Hence, the quote from "Top Gun".

No, really, I meant it. Fewt is a very technically savvy guy and he seems to have a special talent for stuffing Linux into netbooks. Since I just bought my wife a Netbook your post came at an opportune time.

Ditto. Your "edits" were equally entertaining. But, I must confess, I had more material to work from than you, so my job was easier. Anyway, those that read this thread will decide for themselves what Fewt's feelings about Ubuntu and Linux are.

It will take more than wallpaper to convince me to put Fuduntu permanently on my wife's netbook, so that why I burned both versions. With the arrival of the new DVD/CDROM for her netbook I will be giving each a look, if the AA1 can boot from the external DVD. Also coming is a 2GB RAM upgrade, which I hope will give Maverick a possibility of being selected. (BTW, I tested another known good ISO burnt to DVD and it, too, failed to boot, so it appears that this Sony notebook has a problem booting ISOs burned onto DVDs.)

I like the idea of Fewt obtaining (gift? purchase? what does that mean for Fuduntu's distribution model?) licenses to two popular media formats.

Fuduntu raises other questions as well. As a "merge" of Fedora and Ubuntu I am curious as to how he handled their different packaging paradigms. Is Fuduntu a Chimera or is he converting one package paradigm to the other? Also, is he the only developer? If so, how much time does he have, working alone, to do all the work necessary to continuing merging subsequent releases of Fedora & Ubuntu. In other words, will 14.7 and future releases actually become a reality, or is Fuduntu, after all, just about FUD? With Fewt's history of quitting and blaming everything and everyone else people who consider adopting Fuduntu have to ask if trying it will be worth their time, or are they the target of a disgruntled developer?

Ahh right, fair enough. Note the quotes around "Linux" though, perhaps the implication is that people see Ubuntu as "Linux". I see this confusion occurring often on the internet.

I don't like Sony, they are worse than Microsoft at ignoring standards.

I think you should ask the developer these questions. I don't think you have made a case for disgruntled though, annoyed maybe. Lots of threads on Aurora forum from the last year tell me that you aren't quite right in your assessment.

The 64b Fuduntu booted on this Sony VAIO and I had a chance to look at it. My curiosity was aroused by the Jupiter.exe in the ps listing. "file" showed it to be a Windows executable employing .NET technology.

I scanned for installed mono packages and noticed that ASP.NET, ADO.NET, WinForms and several other PATENTED Microsoft .NET technologies copied into Mono were installed. Unfortunately, these technologies are NOT covered by the EMCA 334 & 335 standards and the Microsoft Community Promise only applies to those two definitions. From de Icaza himself:

Astute readers will point out that Mono contains much more than the ECMA standards, and they will be correct.

In the next few months we will be working towards splitting the jumbo Mono source code that includes ECMA + A lot more into two separate source code distributions. One will be ECMA, the other will contain our implementation of ASP.NET, ADO.NET, Winforms and others.

One should also note that it is ONLY Microsoft who can determine if Mono (or any other .NET clone) actually compiles with those two standards.

Since Novell's sale, with 800 patents going to Microsoft, indirectly or directly, the question of Mono being a patent trap has come back:

Personally, I think Mono was designed to be a patent trap from the get-go. One of the documents released in the Iowa vs Microsoft court battle, in 2005, contained a power point talk with a slide containing a description of how Microsoft was going to use .NET against Linux:

That's how Microsoft is going to handle Mono users in the future, except in the case of Linux distros there won't be a license fee requirement ... they will demand the death penalty. Distro that have become dependent on Mono will have to shut down and open up again ONLY after they have remade themselves WITHOUT Mono.
