[System] RTX 3070 Mobile - Simply doesn't work on Kubuntu 25.04

    Hi all,

I'm about to give up but this forum is my last resort.

My RTX 3070 GPU simply doesn't get detected after installing, looking online, reinstalling drivers from every possible way (software sources, cuda, terminal).

What am I doing wrong ? Please see below for more details about my system. I think at this point, I'll need a step-by-step guide fo finally be able to use my Discrete GPU for all work.

I'm on a Triple Monitor setup. One Vertical monitor, one main monitor in the middle, and one laptop as a third screen.

    lspci -v -s 01:00.0

    Manufacturer: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.
Product Name: ASUS TUF Dash F15 FX516PR_FX516PR
    System Version: 1.0
Ps : by the way, no idea why it shows Ubuntu 12, I'm on Kubuntu 25.04. It also shows the Ubuntu logo in the "About System" section instead of the Kubuntu one.
    Any ideas why ?
Ps2: I've got secure boot disabled but my installation is encrypted if that plays a role ?

    Thank you everyone in advance.

You either installed Kubuntu's Plasma packages on top of an existing Ubuntu install, or you installed something Ubuntu on your Kubuntu. Or it is a small bug. The info is just pulled form a text file.

Kubuntu is a respin of Ubuntu, so this happening is purely cosmetic. The "12"
part I have no idea, that makes no sense

But it is, since it is showing in your system, info.

So, what exactly are your exact symptoms, exactly?
Specifically what sort of specific things have you tried, specifically?

Have you set the nvidia card as the main card in your Bios? At least to see how it works.
On the fly Switching between iGPU and dGPU may still be a hassle with Nvidia, but I have no recent experience with the brand. Others with similar hardware should chime in.

I did no such thing, Kubuntu as been installed via USB on a formated disk. Any way to reset the "about system" section ?

The BIOS doesn't show any card, wether it is Intel Integrated Graphics or the GPU.
The symptoms are that whenever I launch a game or anything else, the GPU doesn't detect it. Also, my Intel and Nvidia Render Status plugin for the taskbar only shows Intel so the GPU isn't being used I believe.

      Also, this :

      Capabilities: <access denied>
      Kernel driver in use: nvidia
Kernel modules: nvidiafb, nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia
It says "access denied", isn't something wrong here ? Main monitor is laggy whereas the laptop and the vertical monitor are butter smooth. It's weird.

You will need to consult your laptop's documentation about manually selecting the GPU at the hardware level, if this is possible, or maybe do so via the Nvidia Settings application?
Again, hoping people with such hardware can chime in once they wake up as there may be other ways.

https://itsfoss.com/intel-nvidia-gra...switch-ubuntu/ maybe, except for the Gnome parts.

You would need sudo privileges to access that, which is to be expected, and not really needed with this command for listing basic hardware specs, but can be used if desired.

        Maybe:
        https://www.kubuntuforums.net/forum/...lays-ubuntu-12

Another possibility is you have something missing somehow. Especially if you actually have the Debian logo as seen above.

          This helped. Thanks a lot.

The Nvidia settings application weirdly doesn't have the "on demand" and "performance" options for switching between both GPU's.

I tried to launch steam with the Nvidia GPU command line for proprietary drivers like showed in the other thread you shared with me. See the result below.
