pls help ,trying to create win 10 usb boot disk

    hello
i have an win 10 iso that i want to flash to a usb stick. What tools can i use to do this ?
i have tried to install balena-etcher but it will not install due to some dependancy issue.

i need to reinstall windows on a small partition because i have some hardware that needs its firmware updated and the only way todo that is from windows with there software.

what usb stick software is outhere that will create a bootable windows 10/11 usb stick ?

    thank you for your suggestions.

    AI Overview

The easiest and most reliable way to create a Windows 10 bootable USB in Ubuntu is using Ventoy. It bypasses the file-size limitations of standard FAT32 formatting and allows you to simply copy and paste the Windows 10 ISO onto the drive.

    Method 1: Using Ventoy (Recommended)
Ventoy creates a special partition on your USB, allowing you to just drag and drop the ISO file onto the drive without any complex extraction or terminal commands.
    • Download Ventoy: Go to the Ventoy Downloads page and download the linux.tar.gz file.
    • Extract the file: Open your terminal, navigate to your downloads folder, and extract the package by running:
      tar -xvzf ventoy-*.tar.gz
    • Run Ventoy: Enter the extracted directory and run the GUI application:
      cd ventoy-*
    • ./VentoyGUI.x86_64
    • Install to USB: Select your USB flash drive from the drop-down list and click Install.
    • Copy the ISO: Once the installation finishes, your USB will now show up as a drive named "Ventoy". Simply copy and paste your Windows 10 .iso file into that drive.

hello thank you for getting back to me so quickly.
when i run ventoy i get these errors

      ./VentoyGUI
      .x86_64

      (Ventoy2Disk.gtk3:7176): Gtk-CRITICAL **: 09:05:57.337: gtk_widget_grab_default:
      assertion 'gtk_widget_get_can_default (widget)' failed

      (Ventoy2Disk.gtk3:7176): Gtk-CRITICAL **: 09:05:57.337: gtk_widget_grab_default:
      assertion 'gtk_widget_get_can_default (widget)' failed

a gui does showup but i am not seeing an option to pick my .iso file and the title of the gui says direct to disk
i can pick my usb drive but cant seem to pick my iso.

      any suggestions ?

you can use etcher or ventoy to make a bootable USB, you should even be able to use the Startup Disk Creator from the app menu.

if none of those are working for you then something is borked about your install or hardware.

you can share your system info by running kinfo in terminal window and pasting the results here using the CODE tag.

i have downloaded the latest ventoy and extracted it. running the gui will only allow my to install ventoy to the usb stick. the top of the gui says ventoy2disk
there are no options to choose an iso file .
with the latest version the errors i reported above have stoped.

ur good, tho for some reason this editor does not automatically strip off the formatting tags so things like and [CONSOLE] need to be removed manually by the user (seems like something that could have been fixed a long time ago, but here we are).

following the link above and downloading the linux.tar.gz

will put the file in your Downloads directory.

from there you should be able to simply double click on it to open the archive in Ark ... then click on the Extract button

that will make a folder with all the archive contents unpacked inside.

scroll thru the new folder contents until you find the GUI app and double click on it to get this window

for a device to appear in the pull down you need to insert a USB thumb drive into one of your USB slots, and hit the refresh button.

once the ventoy disk is prepared you only need to copy .iso file(s) from your Downloads folder to the USB disk (ventoy partition, in case you made a data partition as well).

                  hello
that screen shot looks like what i have. where i seem to be confused is selecting my iso, now re reading the thread it seems like i need to drag the icon of my iso somewhere on the ventoy ui. when i do that nothing seems to happen. Is there a certain spot i need to drag it to or is anywhere on the ui ok?
it's baffling to me that there is no way to pick your iso file.

ventoy does not seem to work like any usb stick creator i have used before. going to see if there are any ventoy tutorials on U-tube. I seem to be missing something really basic to using this tool

ok i think i have it now watched a few videos on this tool. going to give this a spin
I am sorry for being a idiot and waisting your time. I do want to say thank you for your help !!
sorry again for not having a clue.

Once ventoy has been installed to the usb, you unmount it so you can safely unplug it. Then you just plug it in. You’ll be asked to mount and open it. Then you can just drag and drop the iso file into the open window. Then unmount the usb so it can be safely unplugged. Now, you shut down your PC. Plug in the usb and boot the PC. Ventnoy will boot from the usb and you will be presented with iso entries to boot from.

once you have created the ventoy to prepare the USB drive, you no longer need ventoy.

then you just use your file manager (dolphin) to copy the .iso from your Downloads folder to the Ventoy folder of the USB drive.... just like any other file copy operation.

you can copy as many .iso files as will fit onto the USB.

when you reboot using the ventoy USB it will offer you a menu with all the .iso files you have copied onto it and you can choose which one to boot (sort of like grub).
