    Linux 6.16 Kernel on 24.04 LTS

    Hi Everyone,

    I was doing my usual YouTubing, when I stumbled across a number of videos announcing the release of 6.16 Kernel.

    From what I understand, the Kernel looks impressive and the benefits will definitely be more appealing for anyone wanting to move away from Mac and Windows.

    I am running a customised PC which is 3 years old and is still exceeding my requirements without breaking a sweat. I am running Ryzen 7 5700G which has inbuilt Radeon Graphics, so I don't need to worry about Nvidia at all - and I can choose to have Linus' Middle finger to Nvidia as a wallpaper if I wish.

    The question which no doubt a lot of people would take interest in is;

    Can Kubuntu 24.04 LTS or non LTS be upgraded to use the newly released 6.16 Kernel, and is it worth it?

    Thank you in advance,
    Michael

    Yes
    Maybe, maybe not.

    There are sources for kernels available. None are official.

    You'll likely come across Mainline first. These are "vanilla" builds that are not compiled with the usual tweaks a distro does to make them "fit" 100%, so they can sometimes not be compatible with proprietary Nvidia drivers, among other things.

    But the good thing is, installing a new kernel doesn't remove the old version (s) you you already have so testing is pretty safe.

    But do be prepared to to be at least a tiny bit underwhelmed in relation to the press hype.

    It all probably depends on your particular hardware.

      There's supposed to be several upgrades to BTRFS that show significant performance gains. However, as I actually need to use most of my computers I will wait for the Ubuntu team to release it.

      On my desktop, I'm still using 6.11 because I'm using the AMD proprietary drivers and I will have to remove and re-install them as part of the upgrade to 6.14. I'll probably just wait for 16 and jump to it from 11.

      My laptop has an nvidia GPU so I'm not in a hurry to mess with that either.

      My server is on 14 because no DE or video drivers so no issues.\ there.
