just uncheck the offline updates option an you are in complete control of when it restarts... just don't forget that applying updates only applies them to the files on disk and does not apply them to the libraries running in ram, so if you want be sure to be using the updates then you need to restart.

question what is /lib/systemd/system/ daily apt upgrade timer? does that just install updates at specific time daily? like 6am if it says that?

I believe that setting the configuration options for unattended-upgrades in /etc/apt/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades/ etc. creates or modifies this file - as well as /lib/systemd/system/apt-daily.timer

Here is a good tutorial that shows the general configuration that is well made and easy to follow:

I believe that you don't need to modify the systemd timers directly, generally speaking

Unattended upgrade automatic reboot set to false wont auto reboot upon updates complete right? if i set to true it will at specified time per day. on aptupgradetimer i changed random delay to 15m so it does not conflict with other file. i can reboot manually later on. I guess the difference is one checks for updates and the other file installs them at specified time

I would assume it would do what it says it will do.

do we need to enable "offline updates" in the system settings. does that require a restart on every update? sorry for all the questions. we could do updates once per week right and have auto reboot on sunday 3am for example rather then daily

my brief experience with "offline updates" was that it required and reboot after every update (at least ones that require a password) and that if you let more than one set of updates pile up, you may have a reboot bonanza on sunday at 3am, but it should work.

Offline updates in KDE's System Settings is distro-agnostic and completely unrelated to the Debian/Ubuntu-specific unattended-upgrades.

It only affects deb packages updated through Discover and has no effect on updates done using apt directly, such as when updating from the command line , using Synaptic, or unattended-upgrades.
