Logging in pauses for about 3 minutes after entering password.

Hello everyone! I am having a problem while logging in plasma. My problem is that when I enter the login password, the screen gets stuck there for about 3 minutes, maybe more. I have been facing this since I first installed nordvpn via command line according to the instructions of the nordvpn website.

I am correlating this issue with nordvpn because I found a workaround that had been working consistently until recently. That was having the killswitch activated and logging out of my nordvpn account before shutting down. This way after entering the password the plasma would start in seconds. I would then disable the killswitch or login to my nordvpn account and everything would work fine. Now after a system update this workaround stopped functioning.

I believe it is somehow network connected but I can't find a solution. Reading similar threads here and in askubuntu, I saw a couple of solutions, but that included some command line commands that I did not understand what they do, or if they were safe.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

    Thank you in advance!

PS: I am running 24.04 LTS fully updated.

    Hi there,

I am on 24.04 LTS and i use NordVPN. It does not have a GUI. Only command line. Even if you install a snap, it will guide you to command line. Type nordvpn in konsole and you'll get the commands.

Do you really need NordVPN since the startup of the machine?

Hello, thank you for your reply!

I don't really need it since startup, that's a very good point, but I have not found how to do it… I can´t even quit the thing so snap can update it!

Regarding my settings, I just followed the instructions that the official website offered and this is the setup I got. Additionally I installed the NordVpn Plasmoid from Discover which does give me some basic GUI functionality.

I am actually logging in Plasma without Nordvpn connection, that means either disconnected or logged out (with killswitch on), otherwise I have this 3 minute lag. I still can´t explain why blocked internet could lead to a fast Plasma login, while unblocked internet would lead to this 3min lag…

Nordvpn was installed via snap. I disabled it, and the problem persists.

        Any ideas?

        Thanks in advance

zahtar, I am running Kubuntu 25.04 with Nordvpn having no problems. I installed the newer graphical version... https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2025/05/...pdate-adds-gui

I also have auto connect on, plus I also put it into the AutoStart folder so I can change server after it's loaded. As I said it works well in 25.04

sam2fish, thank you for your reply!

I am running the snap version, fully updated. Actually I have disabled the snap, but the problem persists for all accounts I try to login with.

I am hesitant to install the newer GUI version before I fix the current situation. I´d like to make it work first, rather than risk complicating things more.

            Any ideas?
