Nope, not needed in 20.04. Just the hwe kernel meta-package. This is a difference from previous LTS releases.

technically, 20.04 is supposed to be on the hwe track automatically, though there is no reference to when, for existing installs, this will happen. The latest ISO image does have the new kernel, but it does not appear to have been enabled on existing installs at the moment.

if you want the new kernel now:
sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-20.04

In my case, like you indicate, I have kubuntu 20.04.2 (fresh install 20.04) and not update kernel to 5.8 (new kernel in new iso 20.04.2).
Like indicate, not have been enabled on existing installs.

Before view your reply, I was installed linux-generic-hwe-20.04 and update kernel to 5.8.

After view your reply I try with the command: sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-20.04

But I have an error.

I uninstall kernel 5.8 and linux-generic-hwe-20.04.

Dunno, that is not a normal kernel package version, so you have added something causing the errors. most likely.

First, before view your reply and install linux-generic-hwe-20.04, then, the system update the kernel to 5.8, after restart, upgrade again kernel to new version of 5.8.

Any extra repo about kernel or setting or similar about kernel.

Only update kernel from 5.4 to 5.8 when I was installed linux-generic-hwe-20.04.

After view your reply, I remove kernel 5.8 and the installed.

If in synaptic type linux-generic-hwe-20.04 any problem for install.

As I comment, I did not do anything new since my last answer, I had already uninstalled, purged and rebooted.

the package
linux-image-5.8.0-43-generic is not in the stock repos, but is in the testing 'pre-release-updates', and as you can read from that post, it can make things messy.

Sorry, I did not see the link to the wiki, I did see the link you put to the forum, but the link to the wiki, I missed it, now that you mentioned it, I have reviewed the whole thread and I have seen that there was no link viewed.

But after seeing your screenshot, mine has surprised me very, very much, something that I had not looked at because, I automatically deduced it was not necessary, since I never, but I NEVER touch that aspect or that configuration in the updates, I leave it as it comes in the fresh install, with security updates.
And this is the surprise that I have taken:

How is this possible?
What program that I have installed has been able to make this modification?
The programs that I install, in my repos, can be seen, none "strange" or "dangerous".

Now I understand why, at one point, after installing hwe-20.04, linux-image-5.8.0-43 was installed, without being stock

Really, I am speechless, not knowing what to say ...

And above, the "Pre-released updates" I can not uncheck it, the most is to leave it in bold as seen in the image, but I can not leave it completely unchecked.

I must say that the other day, synaptic asked me if I wanted to continue receiving Opera updates (which surprised me) and that for this I added a repo (I understand that Opera had already added it) is the "only" thing that has been strange .. .

But I do not know since when I have that configuration, because as I mentioned, since I installed kubuntu 20.04 (like all versions) I leave only marked what comes by security default ...

I'm not knowing what to say ...

I'm work with kernel 5.4, but in preferences of updates, I can't disabled or uncheck 100% "Pre Released Updates"...I search info but I can't uncheck...

Then, when type sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-20.04 go to install kernel linux-image-5.8.0-43.

Any suggestion or idea about this?

That is fine now, I see this in my updates this morning, so it has been moved to the normal section if the repos

I have no idea why you cannot change that setting.

post the contents of the file /etc/apt/sources.list. it may have clues, but if there was something amiss with the file, it normally would show an error message somewhere.
Also post the file permissions of the file:

ls -l /etc/apt/sources.list

This file has the basic repo information for your system. Normally, any extra repos added, such as PPAs have their stored in individual files, so adding Opera's repo should not mess with this, if they are doing things correctly.

I have seen that I also have a file called sources.list.save
They are exactly the same, but yesterday or the day before yesterday, I saw one more line at the end of the .save, referring to the kubuntu backports (I add the backport ppa as soon as I install kubuntu).

What I commented regarding Opera ... I was very surprised by what happened. Normally, rather, I always add the ppa's in the same way, there are programs (such as teamviewer and browsers) that when installed using the .deb automatically add the ppa of their repo.

The other day I accessed Synaptic, I don't remember what I was doing and then I got a warning / question if I wanted to keep Opera updated (I don't remember if it asked me to add the ppa). It was strange to me because it had never happened to me and Synaptic had never asked me anything like that (in synaptic, I install, uninstall, review ... but I add the ppa's through konsole).

Well...I can solved the problem or view what are the cause for can't uncheck the box of Pre-Released Updates...

Yesterday, I was open Discover and view file by file all ppa's, and view that, Opera appears like non free.

I uncheck the opera ppa and then, I can uncheck "Pre-released updates".

And this is the result:

Finally, I can view what are the "problem"...
