(Fixed) KDE 4.4.1

I just received the updates for KDE 4.4.1 and as I was watching the changes I noticed that it was removing Kubuntu-desktop and not replacing it with a new version. Luckily I have Gnome installed as well as I was able to go to Konsole and replace it. Anybody have any idea what's going on?

I think it might be just you. I just ran the update and it didn't remove any packages. I did it from apt-get rather than KPackageKit.

I almost invariably use sudo apt-get update&&sudo apt-get dist-upgrade, I never use KPackageKit as I don't trust it.

Kubuntu-desktop is a meta package, right?

I think that is you have un-installed one of the "dependencies" of the meta-package, it will automatically un-install the meta-package also.

This doesn't mean you un-installed your desktop - just the meta package.

I'm updated to 4.4.1 and didn't lose my desktop.

This doesn't mean you un-installed your desktop - just the meta package.

When it had finished and I rebooted all I had left was Gnome, Kubuntu had disappeared. I downloaded kubuntu-desktop and I got it back albeit it goes to a bash login first and I have to type sudo kdm to get back to the login screen.

Updated using kpackagekit and nothing was removed. Kpackagekit did stop working properly in 4.4.1 though; need to launch it with kdesudo/sudo now.

That's a little strange - I use synaptic for my updates usually and "kubuntu-desktop" is listed as and I quote:

This package depends on all of the packages in the Kubuntu desktop system.
Installing this package will include the default Kubuntu Plasma Desktop
installation.
It is safe to remove this package if some of the desktop system packages are
not desired.

Note the last line that even tells you you can remove this package. I suspect somehow kdm got removed and that prompted the removal of kubuntu-desktop.

Anyway - there is a file in /etc/X11/ call "default-display-manager" and it should contain the single line "/usr/bin/kdm". I believe running "sudo update-rc.d kdm defaults" should fix it also.

I didn't add solved because the original reason as to why my Kubuntu desktop got screwed was never explained, at least to my satisfaction. Does recovering from a situation constitute solved?

Yes, that is precisely what it means and is good forum etiquette.

The purpose of adding <Solved> is so other potential helpers don't waste time reading posts the don't require attention and so others who may be having the same or similar issues will know a potential solution exists drawing them to read this post.

Adding <Solved> is not vindication to some unknown programmer who may or may not have caused the issue in the first place since the reach of forums like these is limited to the subscribers.

Since we don't have access to your machine or any way to do an exact replay of what occurred when you did your update, the explanation you're waiting for will likely never arrive.

Whilst I appreciate the help, you can be a tad condescending. I have been on this forum for a good while and I understand the etiquette very well thanks. I have chosen to mark this as fixed rather than solved if it's all the same to you. By the way, who is we I thought only the Queen used the Royal Prerogative.
