9.10 sound problems

    Well then, alsamixer has to work, as it is part of alsa-utils. Let's make sure it is present. Open a console and type:
    Code:
    sudo updatedb
    This will update the database used to identify everything that exists on your system. Then type:
    Code:
    sudo locate alsamixer
    What we are expecting to see in the resulting list is:
    /usr/bin/alsamixer
    Is it present?
    Windows no longer obstruct my view.

      Yes it is, know what, i think i got it going with OSS:

      this suxx but is better than no sound let me know if you got any other clues on how i can get my system going using ALSA. Thanks

        Okay, well i have Audicous and xine now playing sounds at normal-ish levels with OSS but i can launch kmix (icon just doesn't appear in tray) and in System Settings - Multimedia my HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog) sound card is greyed out and PulseAudio or ESD won't play any sound and cause of that my KDE keeps quite as well (start-up, shutdown, etc...) - how can i get this stuff back using OSS?

          Is the Sound Policy Server running? System Settings > Service Manager > Load-on-Demand Services

            I also tried ssetting
            Code:
            dpkg-reconfigure linux-sound-base
            to OSS and reboot but no change...

              Do you have a Karmic 9.10 'Final' LiveCD you can boot into? I'd be curious to know if your sound works correctly and fully with your system from the LiveCD.

                  Ok, I tried to boot from the disk but it would never come up but instead just hang... tried to disable acpi but that wouldn't help either... What's going on here?

                        Use the function key F4 or F6 - look at the bottom of the menu - to select VESA (Safe Graphics) mode.

                          Okay got it booted up in Safe Graphics mode and sound seems to be working perfectly fine....

                            Meaning then, that your hardware is compatible with a 'default' version of 9.10. You have a choice here. You can continue to look for a solution to your current problem - with the compounded difficulty that you aren't exactly sure what you did that caused the problem - or start fresh, reinstalling 9.10 from the LiveCD. You would be reformatting the root partition, and it would be, if you go this route, advisable to reformat the /home partition as well.

                            The call is solely yours to make here. If you don't have that much invested in your current installation - customization, special apps/files etc - then it might be faster to just reinstall, starting a new.

                            Keep in mind, that you will have to deal with your graphics card, as you will have to use the VESA mode in order to boot and install. After installation, you'll have to go through the process of getting your graphics card the correct driver and getting it installed and configured.

                              Nooo! I would like to avoid doing this. I've ben working on this system for a while and it's always been fine. Just the update to 8.10 (from 8.04) caused the first issues... I really would like to hold on to this as I got a whole bunch of daemons configured and running nicely...
