    Microphone (still) not working under 9.04

    Hi,

    I still have problems with my audio. I read and posted several times on this topic, I fixed some stuff (in the beginning I did not have audio at all) but the microphone still is missing. All was perfect under the same hardware and kubuntu 8.10. It is very important for me to skype with my family when I'm out of country and it is really annoying me...

    Please, suggest whatever in your mind but keep in mind that I did try almost everything I found on this forum and and ubuntuforums.org...

    I'm not very expert and if someone can tell me, in few words, what is the different between ALSA and PULSEAUDIO and how to know which I'm using I'll be gratefull.

    Best,
    g.

    in attach please find my current settings for kmix.

    Re: Microphone (still) not working under 9.04

    I've been trying to use Meebo. I get to the point where Meebo detects the microphone but when I try to speak into it, it does not register any input. So, I'll be following this thread... Not sure if the problem is similar, though, or even how to diagnose it.

      I know this answer might sound silly, but have you tried on setting putting everything on pulseradio? I had the same problem and it worked. I have not been able to get the mic from the headset to work under gnome but under KDE it does work.

        Re: Microphone (still) not working under 9.04

        thanks, from system settings, however, I can select pulse audio as "Audio Output" device (which works) but not for the "audio capture" item.

        I have "System settings" -> "Multimedia" -> "Audio Capture" and here only "Monitor of HDA Intel" and "HDA Intel"

        when shutting down my laptop the following message now appears with a colored star:

        Pulse-Audio configured for per-user session

        i'm not sure it is related, however.

        best

          To learn about PulseAudio and its relationship to ALSA, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PulseAudio
          Since we will continue to see PulseAudio in Kubuntu, why not learn how to use iPulseAudio once and for all rather than disabling it?
          If you look in this forum at the topic "how to fix pulseaudio?", you will see my post about how I got PulseAudio working and how to chose the microphone with PulseAudio.
          Let me know if this works for you.

            thanks for your suggestion.

            i read some more insight on pulseaudio and alsa.

            my audio output is working fine since when i modified the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file.

            the microphone still is not working. I tried to use the commands pactl and pacmd as indicated in the post you suggested but it did not work.

            I'm playing around with padevchooser but, again, no success...

            it is frustrating that the same hardware worked under 8.10...

            thanks

              Hmm. Is this a new install or an upgrade?
              Is the microphone connected to the sound card or is it part of a USB headset?
              Did you install all the software as suggested in the other post and did you enable the groups for root and for yourself and then reboot?
              Can you post the output your pactl list
              Can you also give us the the command you gave pacmd? What was your set-default-source command?
              One time I had this trouble when a Kubuntu install broke my sound card. Are you sure that this soundcard and microphone work in MSWindows?
              I'm sure that there is a solution to this little problem.

                thanks for your interest.

                well, I installed kubuntu 8.10 on a new precision m2400 machine and all was perfect, I then updated to 9.04 and a lot of different problems arise. there is a single boot and the microphone is embed, so no way to test it under windows. external microphone, however, do not work (output also, in this case but i guess it is simply not automatically switching to the headset).

                the microphone is embed with the webcam and worked perfectly under 8.10.

                to be honest i did not install *all* the software listed in your post but just verified that I had the following command, could it be *the* problem? I'll try.

                yes, the 3 pulse-related groups are enabled for my login.

                thanks in advace, below the result of some commands:

                  Re: Microphone (still) not working under 9.04

                  Pardon me for asking. After you installed all the packages mentioned in the previous post, in pacmd please run:
                  set-default-source alsa_input.pci_8086_293e_sound_card_0_alsa_capture _0
                  Also, what application are you using to test the microphone? After you have given the above command, can you install Audacity and try the microphone?
                  Let us know what happens

                    well, I just installed all the packages you suggest in your other post except for

                    lib32asound2-plugins since it wants to remove

                    ia32-libs
                    skype

                    and gnome-alsamixer, do I need it? I have alsamixergui already installed.

                    audacity does not show the "record" button, up to know i used skype to test the microphone but now skype is mute... audacity and amarok works well)

                    best

                      Re: Microphone (still) not working under 9.04

                      Open the KMixer window.
                      CLick on the menu item "Settings", then on "Configure channels".
                      Check the boxes in front of "Front Mic" and "Front Mic Boot", if they are there.
                      Then run their slider up enough so that Audacity (the sound recording app) can record a good sound without overdriving the waveform.

                      If your mixer channel settings do not show "Front Mic" or "Front Mic Boost" then you have a hardware recognition problems. BTW, I have the ICH9 audio chip in my Sony VAIO and it works great. Even gives me voice in Second Life!

                          Re: Microphone (still) not working under 9.04

                          thanks greygeek and volkerbradley.

                          - I miss the boot option, in Kmix I never had this option;

                          - yes I run the proper set-default-source command in pacmd;

                          - yes I miss the record button (the one you highlighted) even if my Audacity has different skins with respect to your (ver 1.5.1);

                          - now skype does not reproduce any sound;

                          - the shutdown procedure hangs...

                          again, any help is appreciated. how can I check what exactly hanged last two shutdown commands?

                          thanks
                          g.

                            did you try to see what happened with the dmesg command?

                              Every device preference setting in my System Settings Multimedia "Sound and Video Configuration" setting has "HDA Intel (ALC262 Analog)" in the top position for all "Audio Output" settings and for all "Audio Capture" settings.
