    KDE 4.2 login troubles

    Hi There,

Following - I followed the instructions on http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2 in order to update my machine to KDE 4.2 - which didn't work successfully- first i got KDE 4.2 up but the window decoration was gone... well i googled around and did plenty of apt-get and dpkg commands trying to uninstall, reinstall or install certain packages - but i didn't get it all up and going.
Where I'm at now is: I can change to the console, change to root (sudo -s) and make a startx and KDE 4.2 comes up just nicely but only as root, when i try to login as any user i always get that little message saying "kstartupconfig4 does not exist or fails. the errorcode is 3. check your installation." and i can't get rid of it...What's going wrong? This apparently must be a permission problem. What do I need to check? /usr/bin/kstartupconfig4 has following permissions: "-rwxr-xr-x reg users" - reg is my username - so this should not be the problem - what else do i need to look at?

    Thanks!

    Re: KDE 4.2 login troubles

I had the same problem. I first saw signs of issues during the upgrade process when there were missing deps for the packages that were installed.

Now, I had to reinstall my system with 4.1 because Kubuntu devs like to announce upgrades that are broken. I hate to be of ill words, but this is ridiculous. PLEASE DO NOT ANNOUNCE SOFTWARE THAT IS BROKEN... ONLY ANNOUNCE FINAL RELEASE CODE SO PEOPLE DON'T SCREW UP THEIR COMPUTERS THAT THEY RELY ON... I sure hope someone of importance reads that because I am 2 secs away from going to Gnome.

This happens way to frequently here with Kubuntu and needs to stop. Again, PLEASE TEST ALL SOFTWARE BEFORE RELEASING IT TO PEOPLE WHO RELY ON THEIR COMPUTERS...

Thanks, now lets see how long it takes them to fix this.

...ookaaahaay, i just recently switched to Kubuntu from OpenSuse cause I thought it would work better as patches & updates are tested by more people before they're released....uhm....your post makes me thinking bout that again....I've actually had a problem once before after updating a patch but i was somehow able to fix it... this was a language patch thatr screwed up KDE 4.0 (I believe it was)...at home i got Kubuntu with a perfectly working KDE 4.2 running but here at the office it would screw up....was i just lucky at home? How come it's working there?
I did do pretty much the same...

        Re: KDE 4.2 login troubles

Like I said, I'm sorry for being so cynical, but I, like so many others, rely on their Linux installs, and like you, I switched from other distros to Kubuntu because I love using KDE and the *ubuntu team (Gnome side) really have their ducks in a row; actually after an Xorg fiasco a few years back, some people got their pee pee's slapped and since then, its been great... Then there is the KDE team. They do a good job, but I have had more problems with updates that they put out than just about any distro I have ever used in my almost 15 years of using Linux. It is ridiculous.

Its really simple... Test the software before telling people its Production ready. If its not, and still experimental, put that in plane BOLD _UNDERLINE_ so people can see it; not in some bottom of the page 8 pt font.

I would have NEVER install this upgrade if I didn't read on the home page for Kubuntu KDE 4.2 Released. Should have read KDE 4.2 Released as a beta before final.

Anyway, I'm done venting and I know it doesn't help your problem and for that I am sorry, its just frustrating. There are hundreds of Google pages on how to fix it, but there should be 0 Google pages on how to fix it if you know what I mean

Good luck... If I were you, like me, I am sticking with 4.1 for another month or so to see how this all pans out. As long as I can log in and work, I'm ok...

Well for now I'm just sticking to using root only... not good io know but....better than nothing (or bash only), eh? 8)

Hello, I'm still not able to login with my "regular" user but root only. Any one here that can provide a fix?
            Thank you!

              @ reggler

You got the latest gcc? What are your sources?

Also, where is your kstartupconfig4? Is it in your path? Find out by typing
              Code:
              echo $PATH

I believe your gcc is old. I've got 4.3.3

Check your sources and update your gcc.

                  EDITED:

Proviso: anybody out here on Kubuntu with 4.2? What is your gcc version?

                    Re: KDE 4.2 login troubles

I upgraded to KDE 4.2 somewhat without knowing I was doing it. Adept just said there was some packages for upgrade, and I agreed with the upgrades, without taking too much attention on what was being upgraded. After a reboot, though, I was not able to log in into KDE anymore. The new wallpaper with bubbles showed that it was the new KDE 4.2, but after I put my login and password, the system told me that there was some problem with kwin, and all I had was the new wallpaper, without any icon or plasmoid and without the lower panel (control bar). No menu or anything else. KDE 4.2 was screwed. After a lot of digging in internet, I could come up with a solution. For some reason, the important package kdebase-workspace (and its dependables kdebase-workspace-bin and kdebase-workspace-data) were not installed. After I reinstalled them, with "apt-get install kdebase-workspace", all started to work again. It seems that, for some reason, the kdebase-workspace-data package went into conflict with other package I had installed (I could not precise it though), and adept decided not to install it in the upgrade process. But this was fatal. The KDE team should be more careful with problems like that. I then had the same problem with my desktop at work, but then I already knew what to do to fix it. I am just thinking on how many people is being affected by this, and how many will give up on Kubuntu because of that.

                      Re: KDE 4.2 login troubles

First off, well done for finding the solution!

Secondly - it is not the KDE team afaik 'cos I've been on KDE 4.2 and am now on KDE 4.2.1 (as of a couple of hours ago) and I've never experienced the problems you have had.

So depending on where you got the info it may be worth reporting a bug.

Well ... in some sense it was my fault ... I left the backports source checked on as a default in adept, so as soon as KDE 4.2 appeared in backports, it was offered to me as an upgrade. It is my fault to leave as default unsupported packages. Nevertheless ... it is a bug !

I really could not track back where I got this tip. Where do you think it will be a good place to report this bug ? Is there an official Kubuntu bugtracker ?

I didn't made that because I am not the original poster of this thread ... if my solution do work for him, maybe he surely should do that !

                          Re: KDE 4.2 login troubles

Just a complement. After the last post, I upgraded a "third" machine with the backports repository (my notebook). This time, everything went OK, without the problems I had with the later 2. I found a bug report at launchpad:

                          https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...me/+bug/324277

which seems to pertain to the same bug I reported in my earlier post. My conclusion is that this problem is already solved in the new packages at the backports repository. The team was fast in solving the problem. For others still having the problem, an upgrade to the latest packages should solve the problem (I guess).

I am the OP and stuff still hasn't worked out for me. as I said, I'm able to login and use KDE 4.2 as root but not as 'normal' user...
installing apt-get install kdebase-workspace gives me this:
                              Code:
                              root@ron-kubuntu:~# apt-get install kdebase-workspace
                              Reading package lists... Done
                              Building dependency tree
                              Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
                              that package should be filed.
The following information may help resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kdebase-workspace: Depends: python-plasma (>= 4:4.1.4-0ubuntu1~intrepid3.1) but it is not going to be installed

                              E: Broken packages
                              root@ron-kubuntu:~#
And i don't think that's the problem anyways - something must be screwed with my user....
