    Re: CAD

If you do not require 3D stuff, VariCAD does the trick just fine incl. dxf and dwg files.
VariCAD does handle 3D solid modeling, but not kinematic constraints. Therefore if your assembly is static (like a truss) then you can assemble it. If you have a mechanism (like a robot), you can assemble it, but you cannot expect to move the various joints kinematically.

        Re: CAD

Well Toad - - I know your pain

I'm a CNC programmer using TekSoft and working into CAMWorks. Most of my research is telling me I'm gonna be dual booting for some time.

What is killing me is the hardware locks associated with high dollar CAD/CAM/CNC software. (A usb or parallel port unit that must be attached to the computer for the software to run)

I did get an old version of Autodesk Voloview to work once, but it was so damned slow it wasn't very usefull.

Havent gone back into this lately, but since I hear wine now has a formal release, I may try again.

          Hi there,

I see Bricscad has an Bricscad for linux, havent tried the Linux part, but the windows one is as Autocad.
          It is not free though!

            Thanks ryno,

had a look at their site and their linux version lacks a lot of features compared to their windows product. Pricing is also confusing, ranging from $50 to $3600 for packages which are not mentioned elsewhere??!

I have now received a list of wants:

            1. the programme has to be compatible to AUTOCAD 'cos most clients send specs in the form of .DWG or .DXF format
            2. while 2D is still common, it is causing problems 'cos most clients send in 3D stuff
            3 he hasn't got €5000 for a CAD programme
            4. he wants Bill Gates and Steve Balmer off his computer

So I reckon the will is there and as the old saying goes, where there is a will, there is a bush 8) I should find the time to sift through the site which dibl posted and produce a decent product for less than €5000 ($7000). Madness, innit!

              Re: CAD

You're best bet is probably VariCAD then from what I can tell because it can handle both 2D and 3D files and it is available on the major Linux distros. They also have a trial version for 30 days free of charge so you can test it out to see if it suites your needs.

I haven't used a CAD program in a while but I found CYCAS very powerful. There are Linux releases in both a limited free version and a Basic version for $128 and a Pro release for $300.

That site is even older than this thread!

Still a lot of good links though.

I noticed FreeCAD while I was searching and installed it. It is so good that I removed QCad!

I also searched for documentation, examples, and related sites:
                            http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawik...le=Arch_Module
                            http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawik...nline_Help_Toc

                            http://www.reidsupply.com/Results.aspx?pid=1558094297

FreeCAD is well documented, and there are several videos about it on YouTube.
