Incredible, what happens with Kubuntu?

Sorry for my message, but I'm very angry...

I'm not newbie with Kubuntu, and I'm very happy with new people arriving to Linux thanks to Ubuntu but...if we want that more people arrives Linux Kubuntu can't do that:

I use adept manager to purge alsa-utils, alsa-oss and alsamixer, marking those packages at "purge". Click Apply and...Kubuntu/adept remove and purge 90% of my system!!! I haven't konqueror, kontact, kdm, amule, and more than 50 packages!!!

What's the reason? I only want to remove alsa!!! Can't Kubuntu ask me IF I WANT TO REMOVE that "not important" packages

I selected libncurses to remove, click Apply and Kubuntu removed ALL MY SYSTEM!!!!

Any explanation?

Probably because most of the system depends on those libs.

I advise you to use synaptic instead of Adept, because Synaptic tells you which packages it's going to remove and asks you whether you are sure.

System are broken, I haven't kernel images,I haven't kde, I've nothing. How can be related libalsa or libncurses with my kernel images? I can't boot my sistem now! :-(

If a newbie -or another user, too- try to erase one package and brokes enterely the system, then Kubuntu, Ubuntu or another is a &t********* operating system, sure.

Sorry for the post, but I'm very very surprised and furious...

Sorry. You're right -- removing alsa should not destroy your Kubuntu system.

Open Adept and mark the meta-package "kubuntu-desktop" for installation -- it has most or all of what you lost.

I also found out the hard way - after un-installing a clock app i'd previously installed but no longer needed - that it's necessary to press the Preview Changes button in Adept Manager - but unfortunately you're not warned of this onscreen.

You're probably told to in the Adept-> Help, which isn't installed.

Maybe this could be corrected in a future version, Devs...?
.... or a reasonably comprehensive How-To for us newcomers?

I'm with Boinker 100% on this one. I read his post and was reminded of one of the mistakes I made. I switched from Konqueror to Dolphin in Feisty and used Adept to remove Konqueror. It took Kdesktop with it. I rebooted and had a mouse cursor and my wallpaper but no window manager.

That was my SECOND mistake with Kubuntu. My FIRST was assuming that the default network manager wasn't buggie. I had no WiFi with my ACX100 card until I replaced knetworkmanager with wlassistant.

But as I re-read my own post I see one common point. Each problem was solved within a day by posting to these forums. Kubuntu is the closest I have seen to a distro that a Windozer can pick up and use out-of-the-box. Then again, Windows isn't perfect either and it has given me far more grief than Kubuntu to get running just right.

You know, depending on your age when you began working with computers, some of us spent 20+ learning DOS and Windows. However, upon installing Kubuntu, we seem to expect (a) that what we "KNOW" from our Windows experience will be useful (it's NOT ...), and (b) to master the new OS in a week or two. These are CRAZY EXPECTATIONS!!!

Linux is DIFFERENT -- WRITE THAT DOWN AND MEMORIZE IT!

Yes, but it's a pity that new users can see that things. I can repair the system, but newbies can't.

My computer experience goes back to soldering a jumper on an 8-bit MFM controller because my Tandy 1000 used a non-standard interrupt for hard disk access. My Windows experience goes back to version 2.0 which came with a copy of Aldus Pagemaker. I have spent almost 2 decades expecting hardware and software to work out-of-the-box. And being dissapointed.

Adept is obviously so smart that when you remove a package, it removes all its dependencies. The shouldn't have made it that way, especially not without at least a warning.

So when you removed alsa, it removed the "ubuntu-minimal" metapackage, which depends on all the essential packages and then removed those packages as well.

Same goes with libncurses, which also removes "kubuntu-desktop", which depends on everything needed to run KDE and most KDE application.

I can't find a setting where you can change this. Neither Synaptic nor apt-get dont do such things, Synaptic displays unneeded packages in the side menu, and apt-get has the autoremove option. But they're never uninstalled without a warning.

Can you at least boot in recovery mode and get a terminal? If so, you can probably use

apt-get install [missing packages]

I am guessing from dibl's post that "kubuntu-desktop" will do it.

Yep, if you can boot into recovery mode, try

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Then try to boot into your GUI.

Obvious that remove all its dependencies? Not obvious, I didn't know, and a newbie don't know :-(

Ubuntu it's supposed to be easy to use, and the logical step is to use package manager it has by default. If the default option is dangerous, in my opinion, Ubuntu is wrong.

But it's only my opinion...
