Sometimes I see posts in the form of "Why doesn't Fragillator XPZ use my sound chip right?", and I never heard of the package, and they don't say what the heck their sound chip is, so it's really hard to help folks who post that kind of situation. There must be right about a zillion packages available for Linux (never mind the hardware combinations), and some of them are just plain obscure. :P

Generally I seem to get much more response from the ubuntu forums (even though I am asking about Kubuntu problems) than here. But I feel that it is inappropriate to take my Kubuntu problems to a Ubuntu forum and thereby take up the time of the gurus who would otherwise be answering the questions of ubuntu users

don't feel bad about asking on ubuntuforums, It is the official (ie Canonical supported?) *buntu place, while we are not. I often post links to there if I find a relevant answer to a question in here. We do not seem to have many 'geeky" or "techie" users here. and we have none of the drama a forum as massive as UF can have. Which is of course the way I like it

Also one thing to remember:
not many of the *buntu developer types spend [i]any[/] time in any of the forums, so it is mostly impossible to get their attention in here.

Bug reports on Launchpad get more attention.

I have just switched from Opensuse 10.2 to Kubuntu 7.10. I am very happy I did.

It boots faster, it runs faster and the package management (the reason I switched) is far superior.

Ouch...

Although, that's right, bug reports should be filed at Launchpad. Not just because *buntu folks don't frequent forums much, but because a bug tracker has the necessary tools and structure that makes it easier to work on bugs.

But to say that it's mostly impossible to get their attention from here, kinda makes me feel useless.

Hey Jucato, notice I said most You are only one dude (I think! I don't know if you have clones or not as you are always in #kubuntu; I don't think you sleep ))

My point is still accurate, I think, even if not worded well, as I meant no disrespect to those who work on our favorite distro.

After two weeks of NO problems my system hangs wenn ever it likes to.
Mouse is still working but verything else stops. I have no clou where to begin. But i can tell you it sucks to restart lappie and boot into XP for entering the internet for a solution.

I want to say goodbye to XP or Vista and welcome Kubuntu in my Hart but...... I guess i have to wait with that.

This is very frustrating i can tell, with 7.04 and beryl i had a nicer looking desktop then Vista can ever looks like! After upgrade i have only problems.


I have a multiboot here with xp and upgraded from 7.04 2 7.10 did not work at all with adept after trying the apt-get all looked fine.

For newbees who want a stabel OS i would say better wait for a while, because it is not made for dummys.

I think i will try e new install again maybe now it works

No, I don't think you need to reinstall anything.

While your system is running, open a Konsole window and enter

top

Top shows the running processes in descending order of resource usage. Just leave that window running. When the system "hangs", top will still be showing the top resource hog, and that should give a clue to the solution.

Also, when you think it is "frozen", follow this to restart:

As someone new to alll of this and not knowing much but just enough, I have to say, that through trial and error, I enjoy Kubuntu 7.10. I began with 7.04 and had no issues. I'm running an eMachine, T24xx, and haven't done much to it. It's about 3-4 years old. Installing linux was reasonably easy and everything the pc is attached to, has been recognized and runs smoothly. Dead loss, no. Not to try or be willing to take a chance, that's a loss. Everything broken can be fixed.

Top does not work for me.. It hangs before top gets reloaded. But i did a reinstall and all semm to be ok.

I also followed a topic on Kubuntu.org regarding bugs my issue is also stated out there, i ma not the only one but no solution this far.

Now i am going to rebuild my Kubuntu and hopefully for a longer time..

Thx and i still think Kubuntu it is worth while.

I've said it before, I'll no doubt say it again. Anyone who thinks WinXP beats Kubuntu hasn't installed XP in ages and has just forgot what a pain Windows really is.

Did you know that there's a limit to how many times a copy of WinXP can be installed?

Can you guess how i know...?

The last five or six times i've installed it i had to get a code to type in by phoning an 0800 number.

This has to happen only because at a certain stage of the installation, WinXP 'calls home' as it were, which is the only way it could know that this installation exceeds what ever limit is established. We know that the CD isn't being written to, so no counter on it can be the culprit.

When you re-install, you have to "Activate" it again, and these Activations - i assume - are logged.

I didn't put it very well - i should have said: "Activate", not Install.
