I tried to run Transport Fever a while ago and got a failed start up due to several GLX errors. I wounder if this will work there doesn't seem to be any more recent update.

You likely have the current intel graphics drivers definitely more current than the download on this page.

What you really need is a more specific error message so we can help determine what the actual problem is with perhaps a link to the game in question.

I suspect I am using the open source driver and probably need the binary driver from Intel. the game is called Transport Fever, released November 8th 2016. I don't remember the exact message but something like 'can't find GLX renderer'. I updated a few minutes ago. Rebooted. Tried the game and got the same error message. I had to use a terminal to update as Muon seems to be broken. Muon said 45 packages need to be updated. When I clicked the tray icon then Muon said 'this computer is updated'! I had to use apt-get to update.
During the update I noticed 'Possible missing firmware for i915'.

The game is on Steam.

The open source driver is the only driver for Intel on Linux, there is no binary blob or proprietary (closed source) one such as Nvidia and AMD have as Intel opened the code some time ago. This is why many Intel devices have good Linux support - wifi, bluetooth, graphics

Again, the exact error messages(s) are needed so someone might be able to help search for clues and hopefully solutions.

I ran steam from bash and tried to start the game:

The game said it couldn't find a GLX visual.

It's the Ubuntu steam package.

I was hoping there would be an update by now. I was hoping to try something new but unfortunately no one has suggested anything yet. I hope every one had a Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays for those that don't like Christmas.

Could it be missing some firmware. I notice when doing a manual update part of the output says missing intel32 something. It also say Possibly missing firmware. What is the name of the intle32bit pacakage and is it in any of the Ubuntu repos?

The 2014Q4 contains many fixes and improvements, mainly for Broadwell. It also contains preparation for Skylake.

Xf86-video-intel has been updated with DRI3 disabled by default. During 2014Q3 validation many blocking bugs related to DRI3 was found so xf86-video-intel didn't get updated because DRI3 was enabled by default at 2.99.915. Now with DRI3 disabled we can update xf86-video-intel again.

That's If Xf86-video is still used.

I just did a manual update since muon updater is still broken. I noticed the usual missing firmware warning so I copied it.

I just rebooted and tried the game again. I still get:

Maybe the Intel graphics chip you have doesn't supports the glx extensions the game needs. They are not very powerful gpus

It worked about a year ago with Cities:skylines. That is one of the most graphically demanding games in history. I had to install the latest version of Kubuntu because the system got hosed really bad. Now GLX display doesn't work right? I am guessing the missing firmware error is probably the culprit. How can I fix that?

So, according to the last post in the bug report, upgrading to a newer kernel should fix the issue:

Confirmed that the problem is fixed in 4.8.0-36.38.
