    Use a bracket pair - [] at the beginning and [] at the end of the "code" text you want to post. Inside the front bracket pair type in CODE and inside the end bracket pair type in /CODE. the word CODE can be upper case or lower case.

    So your inxi -Fxz would put copied from the terminal page and posted to your thread reply page between the bracketed pair and look something like this:

        OOPS, also it helps to have the Standard Editor selected in your General Setting page, so you don't have to do through all that typing - DOH!. I was wondering where all those selection buttons went

            Wasn't in my Neon User Edition. Didn't know if it was in 16.04.

                  2) After your burned the ISO to (USB? CD?) did you verify the burn?
                  3) On your Mac you have 6GB of RAM and an 8GB swap. That is good.
                  4) On your Acer you have 4GB of RAM and only 2GB of swap. Swap, if you are going to use it, should be about the size of RAM + 5-10%RAM.
                  5) On both your installs you have root and home on separate partitions. While some thought that was a good thing to do when HD space was at a premium, or they thought it increased security, that kind of partition works against utilizing your HD space efficiently. It would be better to combine the partitions for / and /home and combine them into one using /. That way both / and /home can use what ever is left of the unused HD space as their needs arise, and no space is wasted. If you made your / partition 36GB and only 12GB was used you've wasted 24GB of disk space.
                  6) On you Acer 153 GB of space is missing. Do you have an unused raw partition on it?

                  7) A couple recommendations have been made by me and other folks but there is no indication that you have attempted to follow any of them. For example, hidden or inactive controls is sometimes a problem with an incompatible theme. What is your "Look and Feel" theme? What is your "Desktop Theme"? (see Setttings --> Workspace Theme --> ...) Did you try other themes?

                  Recommendations:
                  1) 16.04 is half-way through its useful life. Download the 18.04 version of Kubuntu, test its checksum and burn it to a USB stick. Verify that it burned OK. Many burners (Etcher, usbmk ...) do that automatically.
                  2) Boot the USB stick and when you get to the partition stage select "Manual". Assuming that you are not dual booting (and there was no indication in your inxi report that you were) delete the partitions on /dev/sda and recreate them as follows:
                  sda1 all the disk except that which will be given to swap. Assign it to / with Btrfs as the root filesystem. The installer defaults to EXT4 so you will have to click on that to bring up the dropdown combo box and scroll down and select Btrfs
                  sda2 swap 8GB for the Mac, 5GB for the Acer (these sizes will allow suspend to behave normally)
                  3) Complete the installation
                  4) Add other apps that you normally add, set up your email, your brower, your printer, etc. Both laptops will use Nouveau so no additional display setup is necessary.
                  5) Having set up Kubuntu just the way you want it, before doing anything else, or getting cute with dipsi-doodle changes, take advantage of Btrfs to make snapshots of / and /home. Here's how:

                  Get notice of a major upgrade? Say, 90+ apps or more? Or, you are going to make major additions or deletions of your system (like installing WINE, or PLAYONLINUX)? Repeat the above steps to create another snapshot of @ and @home, using the appropriate timestamp, or any other naming designation you wish.

                  So, you were messing around on a website, or installed an app that is not in the repository, and your desktop starts acting funny, and despite all that you've tried you cannot fix it. Sound familiar? So, instead of taking hours or days to fix it, IF it is possible, despite the best intentions of your friends on KFN, you open a root Konsole and do a rollback to a previous set of snapshots. It takes less than 5 minutes. You reboot and get your familiar desktop back again, working perfectly, and making a mental note never to visit that site again.

                      You're right, it does, but its default size is only 2GB. His Acer has 2GB and his Mac has 8GB, which required manual intervention, so I assumed he knew about swapfiles v swap partitions, since both of his swaps are on partitions, and are not a swapfile.

                      If you want to use the desktop suspend feature then you need a swapfile or swap partition which is about 5% larger than your amount of RAM.

                      The swapfile is activated in fstab using
                      /swapfile none swap sw 0 0
                      the "sw" part is the activating command.

                      Using a partition fstab would have to look something like:





                      UUID=theswappartitionactualuuid swap swap defaults, noatime 0 2

                      He'll have a comment in fstab indicating where swap was at installation.

                      IF he has a swapfile he can delete it using


                      sudo swapoff /path/to/swapfile/to/be/deleted
                      sudo rm -rf /path/to/swapfile/to/be/deleted

                      AND, he should comment out, or remove, the line in his /etc/fstab which
                      activates the swapfile or it will add 90 seconds to his boot time.

                        Hi, i had the same problem, found a solution on Firefox bug tracker.
                        Switch the renderer to XRender in compositor settings and menus in Okular and Firefox are shown again.
                        Must be issues with the drivers for OpenGL?

                          Hi aexme. This has solved the problem for me. Switched to XRender in compositor settings and now Okular menus are active, Firefox menu is active, and Cairo dock and Yakuake are visible again.
                          I would still like to understand why this happened and what the differences are between open GL and XRender.

                            In response to your questions above -
                            I installed on the Acer a long time ago but I always verify the checksum. Install was via USB.
                            It's been a couple years now and this is the first serious problem that has made the system difficult but not impossible to use.
                            I will take your advice and increase swap space on the Acer.
                            Separate home partitions were created as a "safety measure" for the event that I had to do a re install, it could be done without formatting the home partition, keeping the data there intact.
                            I have been reading about btrfs and the benefits of a single partition, and snapshots etc. I will consider switching to that type of arrangement when I upgrade to 18.04. Do you feel confident that btrfs is stable enough for this now?
                            The missing block of hard disk is a NTFS partition, for Windows. The computer has a dual boot setup. I guess inxi did not list that part of the drive as there a total of 7 partitions.

                              I've been using it for 4 1/2 years without a single problem. I've started with a single HD, added a second one to create a RAID1 setup, added a 3rd HD for archival storage, decided that I didn't need RAID1 and balanced it back to SINGLE and made the 2nd HD an archival storage as well. I have done tons of testing with various apps, including P2P technology, Orbit2010, WINE, PlayOnLinux, and more, and have rolled back from them without a single problem in just minutes. Adding an HD as part of the Btrfs pool (often called ROOT_FS) is not the same as using mount to mount a Btrfs formatted drive to /media or /whatever. Removing it is done using umount.

                              While I do all my Btrfs manually, someday I'll probably switch to TimeShift. It will help me avoid one of the biggest bonehead mistake I've made using Btrfs:

                              btrfs subvolume snapshot -r /mnt/@home /mnt/snapshots/@YYYYMMDD

                              See the problem? When I rolled back using it my system failed to boot because it couldn't find /boot or the kernel. In that case I had to boot with my LiveUSB stick made using Btrfs, copy the archival copy of @YYYYMMDD to /mnt/@ and then reboot. That got me in.

                              The second big bonehead mistake was, while doing a rollback, I mv'd /mnt/@ /mnt/@old and then in a less than brilliant move I "btrfs subvol delete -C /mnt/@old". Even though I renamed @ to @old, the source of all my cli commands was still in that subvolume. I could no longer use btrfs, vdir, ls, cd, mv, etc.... Ergo, I couldn't use systemctl poweroff. I had to hit the power button. Again, I booted into with my LiveUSB and restored @, then modified my procedural steps to avoid that. I did those boo-boos only once.

                              Several others on this forum using Btrfs make me look like an amateur, and at 77 I've forgotten a lot of what I learned about Btrfs, to say nothing of Linux, when investigating it 4-5 years ago, but everything I need to know is simple enough to retain. Thankfully. And, if push comes to shove and I start drooling on the keyboard, I'll install TimeShift.

                              Apparently not. Doing "sudo fdisk -l" would show that and I thought about recommending it, but the problem wasn't with Windows and inxi gave the necessary info. BTW, using -zxxxF gives even better info.
                              Anyway, I was boneheaded for not recommending, in addition to testing other themes, changing the compositor as well.
