    Problems installing steam on Xenial 16.04 kubuntu

    I hope this is the right place for this, if not I apologize and please move it and let me know, thanks.

    I installed steam today and was met with the following upon running it:

    1. libGL error: unable to load driver: radeonsi_dri.so
    2. libGL error: driver pointer missing
    3. libGL error: failed to load driver: radeonsi
    4. libGL error: unable to load driver: swrast_dri.so
    5. libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast

      after some googling I found this command:

      LD_PRELOAD='/usr/$LIB/libstdc++.so.6' DISPLAY=:0 steam

      which solved the problem.

    My video card is an AMD Radeon R9 290X.

    Thanks for the informative post. I, too, am running Steam on my 16.04 with Neon, but it didn't give me any problems installing. I still get a msg asking me to "upgrade" but I ignore it and continue to use my games just fine. I have an Intel Integrated Graphics Chip (similar to HD 3000) and use the Nouveau driver with GL 3.1 composting. However, CastleStory's graphics are triangulated and refuse to merge into a smooth surface, so I can't play it. My favorite, Universe Sandbox^2 runs very fast and is super smooth, something it wasn't doing on 14.04.
