    Help with Network configuration please

    My system has two HDD's. One has Kubuntu 16.04 installed and working fine in everyway.

    I had one problem, editing image files. installed WanDoz 7 pro on another HDD and installed Corel Suite. I was a beta tester for Corel and I have 8, 9 and 10. On this drive I installed Kubuntu 16.04 to see how OS works and co-exists. By this time I had discovered Gimp, a great image editing software. With a little practice I am sure I will be happy and do not need Corel or any other software.

    One problem arised after taking a backup on to a USB drive of WanDoz and booted back to Kubuntu with that USB still connected. My net connection stopped working. I cannot understand what has happened. Here are the details of the system that is working ok with ZTE modem working as a wired internet connection. As soon as I plugged in this was auto configured by Kubuntu.

    ZTE MF197 USB dongle. Auto configured as below:

    connection Status : Connected Primary DNS: 125.22.47.102
    Secondary DNS: 59.144.144.46 IP Address: 223.238.252.142

    LAN and WLAN Information
    Subnet Mask: 266.255.255.0 Gateway Address: 192.168.0.1
    DHCP Server: Enabled.

    System Information
    Software Version : WEB_HCLMF197V1.0.0B03 IMEI : 866710010141155
    Firmware Version : BD_HCLMF197HDV1.0.0B01

    This system does not have any problem. But if it stops working like the other installation I will have to re-install Kubuntu. I would like to learn by correcting the other installation befor deleting so that I can come out of a situation like this.

    I have a NETGEAR WNR614 ROUTER. If I can share ZTE modem which is working as ethernet connection with my mobiles that will be great.

    I will be greatful for any guidence to correct this. Thanks in advance.

    Reinstalling Kubuntu is rarely a solution for anything, especially in networking.
    IF your network connection was working sometimes just restarting networking.service will do it. You can do that from "System Settings --> Systemd and search for "network". Right click on the service and select restart. Worse case mode is merely rebooting.

    More than likely the cdc_ether module is being used.

    Code:
    $ modinfo cdc_ether

    As you can see, there are NO "param"s to set, so it will either work or not work with that driver. The "lsusb" command should give you vendor and code numbers that you can compare with those in the list above to see if your mf196 device is included. Also, do you have the usb_modeswitch package installed?

    In /lib/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswitch.rules is the following rule
    Code:
    # ZTE MF190 (Variant)
    ATTR{idVendor}=="19d2", ATTR{idProduct}=="0149", RUN+="usb_modeswitch '%b/%k'"
    The lsusb command will give you the idVendor and idProduct numbers. If they aren't the same as shown in the rules file then change "MF190" to "MF197" and the two numbers to what the lsusb command shows for your dongle. Then reboot.

      According to this post: http://delogics.blogspot.com/2014/12...nd-review.html

      you have to remove usb-modeswitch.

          Thanks to both of you.

          oshunluvr,
          what the link states is correct. This modem connects as 3g Hostless Modem at "192.168.0.1/index.asp". But that is not working now. That is the reason for me to post this request in networking thread.

          GrayGeek,
          I am learning a lot of commands which I did not know. Thanks
          Output of both systems are same. Absolutely no difference.

          As soon as I saw the replies copied instructions on to a USB Drive and changed over to the other system. mode_switch is not installed on that system. I tried to install a copy I had on the USB Drive, usb.h was missing and I have to change back to this system. Working without internet connection is like shut down in a dark room without even a window. Cannot shout for help, download or browse for information.

          Both outputs are identical no difference. Now I will try and install mode_switch and give the feed back. May be I will install sakis3g also.

          In response to "192.168.0.1" browser says not connected to internet. That means there has to be some network configuration error is my guess.

            Thanks to both of you, it kept me going. Exactly 2 AM.

            Here below are the steps I took:
            As everywhere it is mentioned as Ethernet connection decided to delete all ref. to USB modem. There was only one file usb-modeswitch.rules which had multiple reference to DefaultVendor= 0x19d2, deleted the file, no result. Finally as a lost try created a new Wiredethernet connection, but chose mac address from "wired" menu. This was the second entry. Without even booting it started working.

            Most probably I have tried to establish a WiFi and connected NETGEAR router. That must have created a second mac address in wired connections and Kubuntu was trying to connect to ZTE with the first mac address. That is my guess. With your networking knowledge you will be able to understand what was happening.

            Thanks for a quick reply and suggestions. I wanted to try and report back, that kept me going though I was feeling sleepy. Time 2:41 AM.

            Tomorrow I will try to establish a WiFi network. May be I need to install additional software. Your guidance will be highly appreciated.

              Modinfo cdc_ether should give the same output on both our systems because it is the same kernel module in the same version of Kubuntu.

              Notice that modinfo reports that the vendorID (v) as 19d2, has five productID's (p) that it has been tested with: 1181, 1177, 1173, 1015 and 1003. Your productID, 1405 is not listed among those for which that driver works. That doesn't mean it won't work, but it doesn't mean it will, either. That's why I suggested making the following change as root to the rule in /lib/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswitch.rules from
              Code:
              # ZTE MF190 (Variant)
              ATTR{idVendor}=="19d2", ATTR{idProduct}=="0149", RUN+="usb_modeswitch '%b/%k'"
              to
              Code:
               # ZTE MF197 (Variant)
              ATTR{idVendor}=="19d2", ATTR{idProduct}=="1405", RUN+="usb_modeswitch '%b/%k'"
              Reboot. If that doesn't work the ochunluver's advice of uninstalling usb-modeswitch would be the next thing to try..

                I edited 40-usb_modeswitch.rules changing ATTR{idProduct} to 1405. and created a Mobile Broadband Connection. Unchecked "Automatically connect to this network when it is available" and Checked "All users may connect to this network"

                But that connection does not show in Networks in System Tray. So I am not able to connect to Mobile broadband connection. This modem is hard wired as Ethernet connection.

                Created one more Wired Ethernet connection with default mac address of ZTE modem to selected in Restrict to device drop down box. I saw that it was trying to connect to NETGEAR mac address.

                As soon as the connection was created, modem connected. So this is the correct way to permanently solve the problem.
