It seems that sddm-helper is sucking the rams right up
No fix yet, for non-compiling types of folks. I am hoping this can be taken care of soon, but at least those of us experiencing this can know why and follow things

In the meantime, one can simply use a different login manager, such as lightdm-kde-greeter, or whichever one you like.

This not likely due to the issue in the OP, or of systemd.

If you are seeing the "COM32R" problem, it is a bug in the iso image
And/or the usb disk making software.

The usb-creator from 14.10, the latest unetbootin from their home page, or using dd should produce a booting disk

I Forgetted to mention in the OP that sddm is not a requirement for running Plasma 5. Any login manager will work just fine.

I had Kubuntu 14.04 with Plasma 5 installed as a guest OS. I upgraded it and then ran the version upgrade. After a reboot the plasma desktop comes up and the panel shows. However, any mouse click on the panel causes it to go invisible. One can right click at various places where the panel components should be and see popups but left clicks do nothing because applications are not visible either. Even trying Alt+F2 to run any app, like Konsole, FireFox, Kate, etc..., and it is invisible when it runs.
I'm hunting a fix right now...

Are you running Plasma 5 (and hence 14.10) in a VM, or do you mean that you were using the Neon PPA when you had 14.04, and upgrading to 14.10? That is not a guest OS, it is simply a Plasma 5 desktop with the environments changed so that it can run as a separate DE. There is no Neon for Utopic, so my guess is that the libraries and dependencies between 14.04 and 14.10 are different enough to make mayhem

I had downloaded the iso Kubuntu Plasma5 ISO and installed it as a guest OS. I did not use the PPA.
I booted into the plasma5 guest OS (which was on 14.04) and updated it to Kubuntu 14.10. So, I suspect your dependencies hypothesis is correct. I am going to download the Plasma5 ISO and reinstall it.

You might try adding the -Plasma Next ppa, that is where the Plasma 5 stuff for 14.10 comes from.

mmm I upgraded my guest OS from 14.04 to 14.10, so my initial installation had to be 14.04. Now, I'm wondering how I put Plasma5 on it. There wasn't a PPA in the sources.list, so I am pretty sure I burned an ISO and installed to get Plasma5, which was the only desktop available.

I assume that file is on the iso DVD? If so, not sure I can change it without doing another burn to a DVD +RW disk, I'm using DVD +R disks. I have 14.04 updated to 14.10 now, so I'm going to try to install plasma 5 using the terminal first before trying the iso again.
