okay, i got the kmail directory... i wasn't finding it, because instead of extracting it into ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail -- like i was trying to do -- it was actually extracting in ~/home/user/.kde/share/apps/kmail

    d'oh... :headdesk:

so, now i've got the kmail directory, first i tried putting it where it was supposed to go. no luck.

then i tried "importing" it with the kmail import wizard. again, no luck.

i subscribed to the KDE-PIM user mailing list, and i would post there, except that my email server doesn't want to do what it's supposed to do, and, unfortunately, there's nothing i can do about it except wait until whatever demon infests the network decides to go elsewhere. 8/

UPDATE: a message has been sent to the KDE-PIM user mailing list... i'll post here when i have a solution.

Check the permissions on the directory and files to make sure they are sensible; manually copying files back from my backups means I have to run chmod -R 0755 . to make sure things work as expected.

did that. everything appears to be owned by me... but, still, nothing works. 8/

          But is it writeable?

okay, here's the story so far...

i finally got the archive to extract with all the files, which, for some reason, it was not previously... but in the mean time, i had done a number of things to my default installation of kontact that i decided to wipe the machine and start over again.

also, part of the problem -- according to the KDE-PIM users mailing list -- https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kdepim-users -- was that i was only replacing the ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail directory, when i should have been replacing the entire ~/.config, ~/.kde, and ~/.local directories.

so, i wiped and reinstalled, and replaced the required directories, and -- like magic -- things are a lot closer to being the way i wanted than they were yesterday.

still... for some reason, i have been unable to POP all of my email... and it seems that one of my POP accounts has a password that i don't remember... but that's small potatoes compared to where i have been for the past few days.

i'm well on my way to being back up and running. thanks! 8)

Ah. I assumed you had already had those restored. My bad. Hope you remember the password.

final resolution: i got the POP email accounts straightened out... apparently all of the information wasn't there, but enough was that i was able to go through the accounts individually and fill in the blanks.

also, it appears that the same thing happened to the filters, as well. i had a whole bunch of filters that i know had actions when i made them, but none of them had actions. going through, one by one, and replacing the actions, and everything works just the way it did on my old machine.

                thanks! 8)
