I also did repeat the updates you recommended yesterday -

the first uptate gives the same problem with slpd.

So does the last, but in the body of text during installing, I found this:

    Processing triggers for gnome-icon-theme (3.10.0-0ubuntu2) ...
    kbuildsycoca4 running...
Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-nils" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.

"Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-nils" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0"

This indicates that it is expecting uid 0 or root to be the owner instead of uid 1000 which is you.

You can check that location with 'ls -la' and find what needs to be set back to root as the owner... then 'sudo chown root:root filename' or /var/tmp/*.*

There still is a problem - probably upgrading.

When Kubuntu desktop is starting get this message:

          "System program problem detected."

Then, as I try upgrading, it will abort at the end. This is related to "slpd".

I have tried purging "slpd" - succedds.

But when I try instlling it:

          nils@ubuntuNils:/$ sudo apt-get install slpd

So, I am able to purge "slpd" but the file "slpd" in /etc/init.d remains.

Should I remove that file before trying to reinstall it?

            Yes.

However, after removing /etc/init.d/slpd, reinstalling is most likely going to result in the same initial issue. I just installed slpd here. I got this:

slpd was not previously installed here. I removed /etc/init.d/slpd and then purged slpd without any issues. My guess is that the application wasn't packaged very well.

Thanks - now I deleted the slpd file and purged the slpd program (or whatever it is).

It seems loading Linux and Kubuntu runs a little faster, but I still get the warning:

              "System program problem detected."

              'sudo apt-get -f install'
              and
              'sudo dpkg --configure --pending'

              does not change anything either.

So I most probably have a problem of some sort, but it seems not to bother me at this time/what I have been trying to do.

Perhaps the best thing is wait to se what happens when the next upgrades are present. If they install ok and I have no other problem than a slightly annoying error message when the Kubuntu desktop appears, then I probably can live well with that.

Do the ls -la on your home directory instead... those are the files that need to be under your control instead of root.
In the listing you gave the root root for each line means owner name / group name. So the stuff in /home/username/ should all show username username for each line except for the .. line.

The 2nd one... giving the most detail
The .rpmdb is owned by root but typically that is not a required file for KDE/Kubuntu.
So I assume that is not a part of your Kubuntu install... as rpm stuff is Redhat/CentOS packages and it looks as if your home directory is mixed up with both Linux styles.

iiwy I would start over with a clean install.
                    Kubuntu 18.04 on AMD

After the last kernel upgrade everything seems just fine, so I'll be leaving it as it is. Don't know what happened, but something during upgrade, obviously.
