    Waiting 60 more seconds, etc...etc..

    I'd like to solve (once and for all) the nagging 2-3 minutes it takes to boot while attempting to set up the network configuration...

    First I get
    Waiting for Network Configuration
    then
    Waiting up to 60 more seconds for Network Configuration
    and finally
    Booting without Network Configuration
    I do have wireless, but the wait kinda drives me crazy and it seems that there should be some kind of fix...

    Usually, this is caused by waiting for a wired eth0 connection.

    Try removing the lines (put a "#" in front of them, effectively making them comments) referring to eth0 in the file /etc/network/interfaces. It should then boot without the delay.

    The lines in questions usually look like:
    Code:
    auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet dhcp
    and you want them to look like
    Code:
    #auto eth0
    #iface eth0 inet dhcp
    From then on, if you use the ethernet for a wired network, you'll need to configure it in Network Manager.

      so I tried that, but it seemed to take even longer, I got the same messages and then it wouldn't connect at all, so I uncommented the first two lines and restarted and I'm back to square one...

        to clarify, I did comment the lines as you suggested, but then I uncommented them back to this:
        Code:
        donald@donald-HP-Pavilion-tx2500-Notebook-PC:~$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
        # interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)
        auto wlan0 lo
        iface wlan0 lo inet loopback
        #auto lo
        #iface lo inet loopback

          You can also go to

          /etc/init/failsafe.conf (I believe) --- this Debian system I have access to runs systemd and it doesn't have the same startup systems anymore I believe. But you should be able to check if there is a failsafe.conf somewhere. Open it, edit it, remove the waits.

          Then you'll never run into it again. Also it can be caused by any script in your /etc/network/if-up.d/ returning a non-0 value, at which point the whole chain of scripts will exit and upstart will never be notified of the success of eth0. That failsafe is waiting for such a message from upstart.

          //edit:

          I really dislike that systemd. Just from the looks of it (the config file structure etc.) I don't like it, but I already knew that. Upstart is still there but there are only 1/5 the config files in its /etc/init directory, and no longer the failsafe.conf that so bugged my Kubuntu system.

            thanks for the lead...here's my failsafe:
            Code:
            start on filesystem and net-device-up IFACE=lo
            stop on static-network-up or starting rc-sysinit

            emits failsafe-boot

            console output

            script
                    # Determine if plymouth is available
                    if [ -x /bin/plymouth ] && /bin/plymouth --ping ; then
                            PLYMOUTH=/bin/plymouth
                    else
                            PLYMOUTH=":"

                # The point here is to wait for 2 minutes before forcibly booting
                # the system. Anything that is in an "or" condition with 'started
                # failsafe' in rc-sysinit deserves consideration for mentioning in
                # these messages. currently only static-network-up counts for that.

                # the end of this script to avoid letting the system spin forever

                # away as soon as failsafe starts.
                    sleep 1
                exec initctl emit --no-wait failsafe-boot
            end script

            donald@donald-HP-Pavilion-tx2500-Notebook-PC:~$
            ...which shows all of my error messages...I guess I don't understand what it is...what is it waiting for? Plymouth? and what is Plymouth anyway?

            ...are you suggesting that I just change the sleep numbers to 0 ?

                do you mean to delete the line?

                ...which brings up another question...is there a more elegant way to do this? One that won't cause a string of error messages in dmesg?

                I looked through my /etc/init folder and found a bunch of related folders and files...a number of which I'm certain that I don't really need...

                I'm guessing that 'plymouth' is the kubuntu splash screen, is that correct?

                  WPA credentials in your interfaces file seems strange? Try commenting those out.

                    No, "deleted" means I deleted my post. Someone or something has obviously messed with your interfaces file so without more info, I doubt we'll be able to help you. An un-altered interfaces file looks like:

                    Code:
                    # interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)
                    auto lo
