Depending on the specific options specified in the dd command, it can. If one is "wiping" by writing zeroes to disk, it will take a bit to get to 32 gb of them
. It is done when you get your prompt back.

I use PartedMagic's Erase Disk program. It gives good visual feedback. It will give a time left to finish and a time for how long it has taken so far. My 16 GB PNY took close to two hours to zero-wipe.GigaByte GA-965G-DS3, Core2Duo at 2.1 GHz, 4 GB RAM, ASUS DRW-24B1ST, LiteOn iHAS 324 A, NVIDIA 7300 GS, 500 GB and 80 GB WD HDD
