Lost KDE shell after resuming from sleep

    Hello!

I recently installed Kubuntu 13.04 and when the (regular desktop) computer wakes up from the sleep, the KDE shell seems gone : the bottom taskbar, the application titlebar all has disappeared, and right-clicking does not pop up the contextual menu anymore (see screenshot below).

Anyone know what might be causing the problem?

    Screenshot:

    Code:
    uname -a
    Linux Zalman83 3.8.0-26-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jun 17 21:43:33 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    X.Org X Server 1.13.3
    kde4-config -kde-version
    4.10.4
    lspci |grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF116 [GeForce GTX 550 Ti] (rev a1)

I looked at syslog, and found these messages :

    Code:
    Jul 17 05:25:23 Zalman83 kernel: [ 2512.219420] nouveau E[ PGRAPH][0000:01:00.0] TRAP ch 1 [0x023fe00000]

Then, there is a few thousands of these messages :
    Code:
    Jul 17 05:25:23 Zalman83 kernel: [ 2512.252626] nouveau E[ PGRAPH][0000:01:00.0] TRAP ch 1 [0x023fe00000]

Are these TRAP and SHADER events normal ?

    Full syslog
    http://www.2shared.com/file/qfY2y6BL/syslogtar.html

Timestamps of the events in the logs :
    21:58:24 boot time
    22:39:55 sleep time
    05:25:23 wake up time

You might start by installing the nvidia driver and see how that changes things. Clearly, something is wrong/conflicting with the nouveau driver. I counted over 25000 nouveau errors before your network card was activated.

I wasn't sure if those were errors... ok, i'll try that!

You can also try logging out and back in after you wake up the laptop. I know it's not the optimum solution, but it might get you working at least.

From what I can find, it appears the issue was fixed in later kernels. If you upgrade to 3.8.8 or 3.9, this might go away. However, IME the nvidia driver is much better than the nouveau driver so it's a good upgrade. The only downside is the requirement for kernel headers and dkms which takes a bit more drive space and time to upgrade, but not a huge amount added in either case.
