AVerTV Hybrid + FM PCI, iTunes, eMule...

Hi, people. I'm new here and to Linux, I used to run windows and I had all applications configured as I want, but now that I've decided to switch to Linux, I'm having trouble to run some issues. Before posting, I've done my best trying to find my way out, but I recognize the need of some help due to my newbie status and my reduced knowledge of this OS. So thanks in advance...

I'm running the Kubuntu 12.10 on a AMD phenom and 4GB RAM, here are my issues:

    - How to configure (step by step, if possible) AVerTV Hybrid + FM PCI
    - iTunes is suitable to use ? If not, what alternatives ??
    - aMule is the equivalent of eMule ? Is it working the same way ??
    - Can you recommend me Anti-Virus and Firewall, and anything to improve security ??

I hope you can help, any suggestions for newbie user also welcomed. Thanks.

P.S. Any configuration of hardware or installation of software are the same in all Linux versions, or this may vary ??

For info on TV tuners and the like, search the MythTV forums and databases. MythTV is a DVR/TV watching distro and they have a lot of experience with tuners. According to this http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/AVerMedia it's supported.

iTunes works on my sons 12.04 install - google how to install it using playonlinux.

I haven't used amule for a long time, but it worked as you would expect.

There's a firewall installed by default called ufw but I don't use it. Since this is linux, there are several others you can install so you'll want to google around on that topic too. As far as anti-virus software goes, there are some out there, but they're mostly to remove windows viruses from email that passes through your machine that might infect others since your linux machine is highly unlikely to be infected. Read this thread http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthr...ght=anti+virus for an explanation.

Since you're new to linux, I'll throw out some un-requested advice:

    1. Linux isn't windows: Drop expectations that it will be. I could go on on this point for days, but rather, let me say that the first battle will be to overcome the "lessons" you've learned from using windows for your whole life. A good example; already deciding you need anti-virus software. Instead, spend some time learning about permissions and ownership and other differences between linux and windows before you make decisions about what you need and don't need.

    2. Slow down. A lot of new users start day one installing and downloading this and that and at the end of the first day they broke their install and they don't have a clue why. Your first weeks with linux should be all about learning. I suggest tackling one task at a time. Start with the default install, work on each piece of hardware to make sure everything is working how you wish before you install anything new and then continue forward one program at a time. A good example here; iTunes. Much windows software will run with linux but usually it will require some detailed work and lots of searches on the internet. You can do without your beloved Apple store for a little while can't you?

    3. Look for a linux program or way of doing something before defaulting to the old windows way. A good example: Adobe Acrobat Reader. There's is a linux version, but it sucks just like the windows version does. Hogs memory, crashes, doesn't look like the rest of your desktop windows, etc. Okular is already installed on your system and work's very well. Give it (and any other linux program) a chance to prove or dis-prove it's worth. In the long run, most linux installs are happier with software created just for linux.

    4. Don't give up. I am amazed every day at how much information there is out there on the 'net. Chances are if you have a question or problem or just want to do something a different way, someone else has tried it, done it, fixed it, and posted it. Plus, this is linux: You own it and your computer for the first time ever and yes - you can have it your way. You have the right to dig into what is on your machine and your OS is no longer trying to keep secrets from you. This isn't to say everything will be obvious, but you'll be amazed at how much control you have if you choose to take it. Have fun!

Enough preaching for today. Lastly, do yourself one other favor and read the forum notes about good posting and how to ask questions the right way. It'll go along way toward getting you help when you need it.

Welcome to Kubuntu and to the Forum!

Try Gkpod for managing your Ipod, Amarok for playing music on Ipod or Banshee

Magnificent welcome oshunluvr, I'm impressed with the precise information you mention in your post, and I'll try to find my way out following your advices. Thank you.

As stated in the thread How to ask questions the smart way..., I may say that English is not my native language (Spanish), so sorry for lack of correct spelling or construction.

playonlinux is based on Wine as I discovered, so I may make a choice.

Related to the MythTV, as I'm seeing, it's a whole Media Center (wrong thought ?? or maybe I'm not reading the right places), I'll check on how to install the Linux version of the TV and FM tuner and recorder (as in windows I had the CD application and drivers).

GilGib, I should have explained it better, the iTunes use that I have, is only to get podcasts, so I'm not using it to manage my music library, nor I have Ipod...

Thank you both for your kind attention.

The MythTV release version called "MythBuntu" is MythTV with an Ubuntu base. It looks at least like your card is compatible and usable with Kubuntu. I can't give advice on how to do it as I've never configured such a card.

If you click on the link I gave you to the MythTV wiki and then click on your exact model of card (I saw at least two possibilities) you should get some info to get started with. I found this link as well - but it's very old http://www.ubuntu-es.org/node/64873. I suggest you start a new thread under "Hardware Support" and ask for advice.

BTW, not that it matters, but I had no idea that English was your second language. I wouldn't worry too much about it - you're already posting better than many so-called native English speakers in this forum!

Precisely The MythTV release version called "MythBuntu" is MythTV with an Ubuntu base. is the fact that bring me some doubts on how to do it, this will install the whole kit based on ubuntu, but I prefer the kubuntu interface , so I'm checking on how to install the drivers, tuner and recorder application on the kubuntu directly.

(Here is the link from you, above, I can't post links until reached 3 posts ) was one of my browsing finds this evening, but I get sticked in the point 4.1, may be it would be better, as you suggest me, to post a new thread related to this concrete issue.

you're already posting better than many so-called native English speakers in this forum! Thank you for those nice words, I do my best to write in a correct manner and coming from an English first language speaker (as I suppose) encourages me to continue.

Start by opening a terminal window and typing lspci

This will tell us if your card is functioning and recognized. It will be in the list.

                dmesg | grep saa

                and post what you see

This bit 1461:2c00 tells us you have the AVerMedia AVerTV Hybrid+FM PCI (A16AR) version.

This bit saa7134: card=99 -> AVerMedia TV Hybrid A16AR 1461:2c00 tells use which driver to use.

Hopefully, this will be all you have to do:

                      In the terminal, type this:

                      Code:
                      kdesudo[COLOR=#000000] kate /etc/modprobe.d/tvtuner.conf[/COLOR]

Then type in this in the kate window:

                      Code:
                      [COLOR=#000000]options saa7134 card=99
                      [/COLOR]

Be sure to leave a blank line at the end of the file. Meaning, when you're done typing, hit "Enter" before saving. Then reboot.

                        TvTime should work with it.

                          Hi oshunluvr,

Yesterday, I was unable to run the TVTime, as I reboot, the configuration and any changes made to the system were undone, that was due to the fact that I was running the system from an usb drive directly, I realise that those changes are only saved on installed OS, so I had to install kubuntu 12.10 (in other drive, I was runnung ubuntu 12.04 within my familiarisation process with this OS).

Well, now with the kubuntu 12.10, I redone all the steps suggested in your previous posts, and at last I was able to run the TV Tuner, but not on the TvTime (that was unable to detect anything in the process of channel scanning, no clue on why ), but on the kafeine viewer. this one seems to be complete, at least, compared to my previous windows based application.

Now, I'm having new issues, that I hadn't with the ubuntu 12.04, related to Sound Card, as I'm not getting the sound or input at the Line In in the Output (Speakers or Headphones), however it seems that played audio files internaly in installed players, those ones, at the contrary are palyed correctly with the only exception of the low volume But this, I think that it would better if I post it in a new thread in "Hardware Support".

At last, let me show my gratitud for your valuable advices and time.

                          Thank you.

Glad we got something working at least. Yes, start a new thread on the sound issue. Others are reporting similar problems.
