12.10 final won't boot from USB

    12.10 has been released!
But I cannot get it to boot from USB stick on my laptop.
My desktop is too old for USB install, I upgraded that one through from 11.04 to 12.10 Beta.
Will do a upgrade to final tomorrow on that old guy.

As in various alphas it hangs during boot on my laptop with various messages. This one hangs at:
Enabling remaining boot-time encryption block devices.
Since there is no more atlernate cd I really don't know what to do with this to get a clean install.

Upgrading is an option, but not a good one.

I need to be able to install fresh versions on different machines, especially friends moving away from windows.

    Anybody else see this?

Thanks for that Will keep that in mind for older machines.
But I am more worried about my laptop (1 year old). Plus, my friends machines all have USB boot possibilities.

      Cheers

"I am more worried about my laptop"

Presumably you have set the BIOS/Boot Order to start from USB...does it just ignore it?

Does you laptop have a CD/DVD-Rom?Or are you just keeping the distro to the stick?

          Yes. Quote from 1. post:

I have a CD/DVD but would prefer USB (usually faster)

You can approximate the alternate installer by using the Ubuntu Server CD. At some point during the installation, you'll be asked which server packages to install. Deselect any that might be pre-selected, and allow the installer to finish. Then after rebooting, install the package kubuntu-desktop and you'll be good to go.

I am not a fan of GUI installers. I prefer to run the command-line text mode installer in advanced mode, and I always relied on the alternate CD ISO to achieve this. With the disappearance of the alternate ISO, I've found that the Server CD ISO is an appropriate subsitute.

Once the install finishes, you can completely de-server-ize it with these commands:
                Code:
                sudo tasksel remove server
                sudo apt-get purge $(dpkg --get-selections | grep deinstall | cut -f1)
                sudo apt-get purge linux-headers-server
                sudo apt-get purge linux-server
                sudo apt-get --purge autoremove
                Then proceed with
                Code:
                sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

                  Right, thanks again.

Too bad I can't use it as a live USB to show off >

Installed fine on my test laptop, although a bit cumbersome. Thanks Steve

Seems to be okay on my test lappy (2 year old sony) but I feel apprehensive with all the Known issues to install on my main machine.
