All of a sudden: System coming apart at the seams...

Just as I was beginning to lament having no problems to troubleshoot: The oddest things began occurring this morning.

I am using 12.04, xorg-edgers PPS kernel 3.5.10-10 and nvidia 304.37 - and have been on that kernel/driver set for three days.

I was running Vbox with a win98 machine playing internet spades, cruising the internet using chrome (SR Iron version 19) and that's it.

    List of issues:

    1. First thing I noticed was chrome no longer had flash. Really weird because chrome includes flash. Indeed, the plugin appears gone.

I started searching the internet for a solution.

    2. Then I went to my menu via Lancelot and noticed the menu background had changed to a dark-transparent rather than light-transparent which I had set.

I opened System settings and attempted to re-set the background.

    3. After trying two or three themes to get back to where I was, the theme loader crashed and closed System Settings.

I went back to Lancelot to re-open System Settings

    4. Lancelot crashed, and launched the backtracer.

I decided to log out and re-log in to see if this would help and noticed...

    5. My system tray icons had reverted from the colored set I installed and prefer back to the ugly grey standard set.

    6. The "Leave" dialog was totally different than before - It now shows a really huge power button icon where before was a small one.

Logging In/Out and rebooting did nothing to change all of the above back to previous settings. The boot went totally normal - no file system errors or logged problems. I haven't done any real trouble-shooting since I now have to go to work. My first thoughts are my user settings have become corrupted somehow but I certainly wasn't doing anything that would have caused that.

NOTE: This all happened within a couple of minutes. At about the pace you can read it...

    Aww!

So renaming ~/.kde is probably a reasonable point to start...

      Hmm...

Possibly related? I don't follow Chrome's development. Has there been an update recently? An update that perhaps broke Flashiness?

It *might* have something to do with the fact that Adobe stopped supporting Flash on mobile yesterday.

It appears at least some of all this was coincidental or self-induced.

#5 (Tray icons): happened because I put the colored icon set into the default theme directory in my home. When I attempted to correct the menu background, the icons were changed back to the black and white set - FIXED

#1 (Flash): I am using SRware Ironbrowser based now based on chromium, not chrome. I needed to enable flash manually and all seems OK in that department - FIXED

Lancelot is still crashing immediately so I've had to revert back to Kicker. Theme changing seems OK. I'm really unsure if the log-out icon actually changed or if it's theme dependant. Also, since Lancelot has been crashing I'm logging out via right-click on desktop or cairo-dock logout which could be different than Lancelots log out - I just don't know and have no way to tell at the mo'. I've re-installed Lancelot after clearing my home settings for Lancelot with no change.

I'll try Lancelot @hear and see if it's logout is any different than cairo or right click on desktop (what I always use) or if it's crashing hear.

Like KRunner, Lancelot can load plugins. Some of those errors hint that Lancelot is having trouble with that. Purging the Lancelot package won't erase the user-specific config files it creates in ~/.kde.

Now here is something curiously coincidental. Over on the KDE forum, I found a post very similar to yours, Oshun...

                            http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=97397

...except that it documents a person having trouble with KRunner, not Lancelot. Even the error messages are similar. Except the home directory in those messages is /home/stewart/, while yours show /home/stuart/. (......) The thread contains a bit of troubleshooting, perhaps something will be useful.

Thanks Steve, yeah I saw that earlier too. Funny though krunner is fine. I logged in as my wife and Lancelot worked fine so it's clearly a config issue somewhere. I'll try and fix it on the 'morrow.
