Well, there could be a variety of reasons why the initial attempt didn't work -- hard to know, really, without knowing the details of how each interface was configured, and doing some pings and traceroutes to make sure stuff is set up correctly. FWIW, the diagram I gave you is similar to my own setup at home, except that the router between my switch and the Internet is a wired router and my wireless access point is hanging off the switch.
