Last night I reinstalled my 'stable' version of Kubuntu 12.04 retaining the /home partition.
All went really well, it took about 30 minutes and another 15 or so for ~680MB of updates.
.Next I tried to install the nVidia drivers, at boot I could switch between the proprietary and the integrated graphics, again no problems on either.
Then I installed Bumblebee and it worked fine, using Optirun I could get nice frame rates for 3D.
Once more I switched to/ booted into nVidia and the old problem was back, I needed to reinstall the driver and log out/ in to enable it.
Tonight I removed Bumblebee and the nVidia system is again working fine...
So now I'm going to find a Bumblebee forum!
