New nVidia drivers (295.53) on GeForce 8M GPU series

Many of you probably are aware, that there are new nVidia drivers available - version 295.53, released May 16th. I don't want to wait for another month or two for them to hit the official repos, but also I'm afraid they will break my X.org server. I want to ask if anyone have tested those drivers, especially on GeForce 8M GPU series. Current drivers available in the repositories did that.

I've been running the 295.53 driver since Wednesday, on 12.04 (and a separate 11.04 Ubuntu install on the same machine). Nvidia 8800 GTS (640MB version). They're already in the official repos as "nvidia-current".

I backed up both installs before installing, but the drivers seem fine. No evidence of the issues that plagued 295.40, and they feel pretty snappy so far.

Well, according to the information I get from Muon, the drivers available as "nvidia-current" are 295.40. What repos are You using?

I've been running them since Wednesday as well... on 5 different machines with no adverse effects. The PPA is:

Well...they broke my system the same way as 290.40 did :-( I cannot login to KDE and I don't know how to revert to Nouveau using only console. Help me with this.

You can't login to KDE? What happens when you try to login? I presume you're presented with the login splash screen?

Try selecting "failsafe Plasma" from the login screen... then disable desktop effects.

Can you guys tell me the problem 295.40 was causing? I was trying to set up 12.04 on my brothers pc that has old nvidia drivers and the desktop was dragging ass slow and the graphics were terrible? I ended up installing 11.10 and it works fine but I wanted him to have the 5 year support so I wouldn't have to worry about it for a while. I'm wondering if I can upgrade it now if they fixed the problem. I'm just not sure what the problem was.

use settings, system settings, desktop effects, advanced, use xrender under composition type.

for flash videos, right click on the video, disable hardware acceleration if you have inverted colors.

Use chrome instead of firefox as chrome works better......i didnt believe it until i noticed lots of issues under firefox.

No, I cannot see KDM splash screen, I'm left with the console. KDE doesn't start.

Hi...

Updating a client's Ubuntu system broke the system as well, although I don't know if it was the xorg or the nvidia driver updates that caused it. Anyway, what fixed it for me was logging into a low-resolution session (that the system offered) and uninstalling the proprietary nvidia drivers using Jockey (Hardware Drivers.) When you reboot, it should be using the Nouveau drivers again. Then, go back into Jockey and reinstall the Nvidia drivers. It worked fine after that.

You don't need the low-resolution console. Check Teunis's post...he provided information for running Jockey from a console.
