Last night I started a "build from scratch" project. Beginning with the net install image (boot.img.gz) zcat-ed to a USB drive, what are the steps for building up an OS containing only the bits I want? I flubbed it up at the point where GRUB installed itself, but I eventually got that sorted.

Well, I installed the Ubuntu Minimal CD, then when I logged in I installed kde-plasma-desktop then after that I just installed stuff as I needed it. However, the Arch Wiki suggests a much leaner desktop:

You've to hand it to the Arch people, their documentation is first rate.
