After a long delay introduced by meatspace, esp. grad school, I finally got around to trying your recommendation. I appreciate your taking the time to answer my previous message. Unfortunately the commands listed, though they completed successfully, did not update my netbook.
However, I've since been able to complete the upgrade (after many misadventures you don't need to hear about), and my netbook is now running 11.10. It's possible that the connection to the Kubuntu site was too heavily loaded when I first (and second and third, etc.) tried to update, and now most people are
