Help: Cannot scan (xsane) from HP 5510

This is a follow-up to another thread at

    http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthr...-printer/page2

I have consulted the hplip pages and found out that using an HP 5510 E all-in-one requires at least level 3.11.10 of hpllip, whereas the current Kubuntu version is 3.11.7. I therefore downloaded the latest hplip, 3,12,4,and installed it using the methods indicated by HP. I rebooted the machine before running hp-setup.

I can add the printer either with hp-setup or thru System Settings > Printer Configuration, either gives the same result. First off, the printer is either defined as a 5510 or a 5510d (it is really a 5510e), which again makes no difference.

For printing, the printer works fine. But after printing, xsane times out and gives an error

    Failed to open device 'hpaio:/usb/Photosmart_5510_series?serial=CN21U3278805V3'
    Error during device I/O

the same error whichj occurred to the person initiating the post referred to above. On his suggestion, I unplugged and replugged the printer's USB cable, the restarted xsane, which now starts normally. and finds the printer/scanner. Howerer, immediately after clicking on 'Scan', xsane says

Failed to start scanner: invalid argument

What gives? Can anyone make this printer work as a scanner?

    Try the free download above.

I would prefer a free solution, but will look at this one. Thanks.

        Hi....

Ah, yes, the good 'ol "tar.gz," otherwise known as a tarball. I'm pretty sure you will need to compile and install it. There are some generic instructions here.

I have used (and have a license for) Vuescan when I was using Windows, it's a good little program.

Form what I read, you must "purge" the old driver (remove all configs and the like) before installing the new driver.

Also, some HP scanners are picky about the availibilty of drivers for other scanners. Try opening /etc/sane.d/dll.conf and commenting out every driver in the list except hpaio (and net if you're using networked scanning).
