system no longer powering off my monitor

After a period of inactivity, my system would run the screen saver for a few minutes and then the monitor would go to sleep. Screensaver still activates, but the system never stop sending output to the monitor so the screen always "glows" slightly.

It used to run screensaver and then after a time I'd catch the monitor displaying a "no signal" and then it would go to sleep. That "no signal" isn't happening any more.

    thoughts?

Have you changed your video or power settings lately?

If you're using a laptop, look at Power Settings in System Settings. If not, DPMS can be enabled in xorg.conf.

In a terminal, type xset -q and the next to last line should say dpms enabled.
