    WLAN interface changes system name.

I have noticed on a couple of occasions now that the WLAN Interface in the Network Manager has changed its System Name from 'eth0' to 'eth1' and back again.

This makes running scripts difficult as I have to keep editing them when this happens.

Has anyone else noticed this or is just me?

It looks like it's only an issue on your system.
Are you sure you don't have two network adapters installed?

As you might have read in other posts about network issues KnetworkManager is causing all kinds of strange behaviour that don't not occur when you replace it with wicd.

I'm pretty sure I've only got the one installed, it's a Dell laptop that hasn't been altered since I bought it, with the exception of getting rid of vista

I did have a few other problems with the network manager, mainly it wouldn't connect but that seems to be OK now.

I've heard Wicd mentioned a few times, is it really better than the installed network manager?

Re: WLAN interface changes system name.

The latest release knetworkmanager is a vast improvement over the previous releases (which didn't work at all). However, it safe to say that WICD is really, really, really better than knetworkmanager.

I've been using knetworkmanager on one of my laptops without problems but if you're having some, can't hurt to switch. If the problems don't go away you'll know for sure it's something other than the network manager.

Re: WLAN interface changes system name.

It's only since 11.04 that I can actually use Knetworkmanager on my home network, before I always had to replace it with WICD because I could not get it to log on or give me a reliable connection.
To always have a fall-back I run two separate installs of Kubuntu on my laptop and on one of them I did still install WICD.
I travel a lot and have to link up to guest networks, something I find due to it's very transparent menu easier in WICD.
And WICD already starts up even before X, very handy in case your experiment with a video driver goes belly up :P

The first time I went to WICD was when I changed my home network to wireless, I wanted to use WPA encryption and it worked out that WICD had a GUI to select the WPA supplicant driver, presently I'm using wext.

I've noticed that WICD is available in Kpackagekit, if I was to install it I presume I would have to uninstall Knetwork Manager?

Yes have a look at the HowTo.

To cut it short, WICD will not function till KnetworkManager is fully removed.
