Logout hangs with a black screen

I have tried "restart" & "Reboot" and they both seem to work fine.
I moved .kde/share.config to .kde/share.config.old and it did not help.
    What's next?
    Thank you for your time

Re: Logout hangs with a black screen

Try this, it worked for me:

        Once you're logged in
kdesudo kate (to open the text editor with administrative permissions)
        open the file named /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc
hit control+F (to find text within that file)
You want to look for "#TerminateServer" (without the quotes, but WITH that # and I don't think there's a space between the # and the T)
That line is commented in the original file (hence the #) It reads #TerminateServer=true
Just remove the # and save the file. So the line will now be read.

You'll have to reboot the machine as the file won't be read until you restart. After doing that, I was able to log out and get to a login dialogue instead of a black screen. I suspect that for some hardware, the Xserver is being left in an unstable state. If you log out to a black screen with just a cursor, use your mouse to VERY slowly move the cursor down from the center of your screen (where mine was when it was doing this to me). You'll likely see it change from pointer to I-beam as you move over the place where you SHOULD be able to type your password. Like it's invisible in that black screen but still there. Typing your password will not get you back into a desktop that's usable (I tried).

Let me know if this works for you.

Re: Logout hangs with a black screen (resolved)

          Thank you Yardbird

Your solution was right on the money.

Now it is a short cruise to using Natty.

          Thanks again.

glad to help. I'd still like to find out what causes that, but it seems a pretty easy workaround for now.

For those following this post - one note of small detail:

You don't actually have to reboot your entire system to restart the graphics server and re-login. After you have saved the kdmrc edit, type sudo service kdm restart in a terminal

For anyone interested, this problem manifests in a clean install of 11.10 as well. I just had to seek out this old thread to fix it.

I also have had this problem with all of my Kubuntu installs.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...se/+bug/181343 is a bug report from early 2008 but now marked as "invalid" as it seems to be video driver related.
