resolution issue

Hi there,

I got a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT and it can do a higher resolution than 1280 x 1024. But KDE doesn't let me go higer, why not?
I also have enabled the 3rd party driver for the 3D capabilities.

What else do I need to do?

Have you tried through the nVidia Server Settings panel or through System Settings?

There is no "nVidia Server Settings"

Well, now we know the source of the problem.

Search this forum for How To's regarding installing the nVidia drivers.

the nVidia server settings would not be located in system settings, it would be a program in your "k" menu. you can also manually run it (if your sure you have nvidia drivers and its not in the menu) w/ the command
[code=run in krunner (alt+f2)
kdesudo nvidia-settings
[/code]

you will be then prompted for your password, and be sure to save your settings to the xorg.conf file (there is a button for that). after you save you will have to reboot your machine. if you have the properitary drivers you can't use the display KCM in system settings to set your res (most of the time).

Oh yeah, there it is, when i start it I get this:
"You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."
I went ahead and executed that and got following:

Executing it again gives me the same warning dialog box.
what's wrong here?

running the xconfig again, i now get:

reg@reg-desktop:~$ sudo nvidia-xconfig

I got a message that the xserver couldn't be started because of some reason and i clicked to run in low graphic mode for one session and to create new configuration and this dialog would come back so i hit cancel a few times and now it saysXsession:unable to launch " X session --- "" not found; faling back to default session and confirming this, brings me back to KDE.
If I launch the nvidia utility now, I don't get this warning dialog anymore. But here's no chance to change the resolution either, i only have 5 check boxes:
X Enable ToolTips
X Display Status Bar
X Slider Text Entries
[ ] Include X Display Name in the
Config File
X Show "Really Quit?" Dialog
and a button [ Save Current Configuration]

closing and re-launchjing it brings the warning box from above back again.... weird...

I don't understand what happened to your system but maybe it helps when I show what the nVidia X Server Settings should look like:

OK, this is a dual screen system but you select the screen in use and then select 'resolution' etc.

that is rather interesting, cause mine looks like this:

I would start with re-installing nvidia-current and nvidia-settings.
