Stupid new user samba question.

Please forgive my ignorance

Now....I am currently trying to set up samba on two computers that dual boot windows 7 and Kubuntu 10.10. My bedroom computer seems to be setup correctly because when I use dolphin and click on network and choose samba shares all of my shares are listed for the bedroom computer and I can access them with no problems. Now my living room computer is not so nice. When I use KMenu-system settings-sharing...everything is grayed out and I can't configure anything. When I go to KMenu-settings-Samba I am prompted for a password. My kubuntu password does not work. I read somewhere to enter smbpasswd in the terminal to set a samba password so I tried that and I am asked to enter the old password---Since I obviously never setup a password I have no idea what to enter. I also have GADMIN Samba installed and believe the problem came from this. How can I delete the Samba config file and start over? Uggg...I feel stupid. Please help.

The prompt is the username/password combo of the samba machine, not your login on the current machine. Have you tried that combo?

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. It is not asking me for a user name just a password. I tried every password that I currently use on my machines with no luck. I even tried to "remove completely" Samba, GADMIN Samba with kpackagekit and synaptic package manager and reinstall them to try to start fresh but when I attempt to open samba I am again asked for the password. I can go into GADMIN Samba and add users but nothing helps.

Could be a workgroup issue.

Samba requires a samba password that may or may not be the same as your log in password.

On the computer running samba, in a terminal;

sudo smbpassword -a john

This assumes your user john already exists. You will be greeted by prompts for a new samba password. Afterward, restart samba for the new user to be allowed in;

sudo service samba restart

However, I can't imagine how you got your other computer to work without going through this step...

Hi Penny. It may be that the two user names of the account don't match. Samba assumes your current log-in is one you're trying to access on the share. So if the share you're attempting to access is "Penny" and you're logged in as Jeremy1701, it won't work. You can map the two manually to each other on the Samba server. Also, Samba is case-sensitive, "Penny" is not the same thing as "penny".

When I try to type sudo smbpasswd -a daddy (the user name listed in GADMIN Samba) I get command not found. I also noticed when I go to kmenu-settings-system settings-sharing-samba(this area is still grayed out and can't be changed) and click on users there is nothing listed even though I have users listed in GADMIN Samba.

I don't see anything immediately wrong with your smb.conf file, and the fact that you can access shares using a different computer leads me to believe it's probably okay.

Try accessing the share using the computer that prompts you for a password. After, check your samba.log file and report back the appropriate lines here.
