    really horrendous upgrade this morning...

This morning's upgrades blew up both a 32-bit and 64-bit machine. Got the netbook fixed but had to go to work before I could get the desktop fixed so I just installed lxde on it and left for the office - I'll sort it out later.

I used muon to upgrade both machines, which in hindsight might not have been the best idea I ever had as I'm not sure it supports blocked updates - which may have been what caused the issue. Anyway, the 64-bit desktop was left with a prompt that said X couldn't find startkde, which was when I installed lxde, ran that to make sure it worked and went to the office.

So I get to the office and hook up the netbook. Netbook says 164 upgrades are available so I run that upgrade, and the new linux-headers-2.6.35.21-generic, the linux-headers-generic metapackage, man-db, samba and kdm all fail to install properly.

Ran "dpkg --configure -a" a couple times, deleted dpkg's lockfile once and rebooted once then the packages installed as they should and everything's working okay, but today was one scary update.

Also, the "general" font on the netbook keeps changing to Andale Mono 12 instead of the DejaVu Sans 9 that I've used for a year. The change takes but when I run konsole or sometimes just running systemsettings causes the general font to change.

    Strange.

That is weird.. I installed updates last night, and the new ones from this morning (a couple of hours back) without any issues.
Specs:  Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (@3Ghz), G.SKILL 4GB DDR2 1066, ASUS Striker II Formula MB, Asus EN9800GTX+ Dark Knight, ABS Tagan BZ800 PS, Antec 900 Case.

I also ran updates last night (apt-get dist-upgrade) and it appeared to work flawlessly.

The default screen size bug remains, BTW. It comes up at 800x600, regardless of what I do to try to change it. This is on a VM -- I don't know whether that issue is related to running on a VM or is the same on a hard drive installation.

That's most likely due to the VM host integration tools not properly supporting the new Xorg (yet). I see that with VirtualBox. There are already bugs in their tracker for it, so I'm hoping it will be fixed in their next release.

Aha! Yes, that makes sense --- thanks 3vi1.

I don't think it supports blocked updates yet - it's still very new, and many features you'll e.g. find in Synaptic haven't been implemented as of yet. It also still needs some kinks worked out, so I wouldn't recommend it for full-time usage.

I'll bet I don't use it for a major upgrade again anytime soon

Very nice program, though. I'll be glad when all the bugs are worked out.

I'm not on the maveric train yet........but I did use muon to do the set of upgrades that took me from KDE4.5.0 to 4.5.1........

muon had DL'd 50 or so of the 180 needed when we lost the Internet connection.
instead of aborting or asking to continue it just installed the ones it had managed to DL

neadless to say that left me with some sudo apt-get -f installing and sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgradeing along with a sudo dpkg-reconfigure -a in thare.

I do like muon and use it regularly but I think if it has a set of things to DL and cant get them all it should at least ask if it should continue to install if all of them don't DL .

I know apt-get would have ....not shure how synaptic would have handled that as it has never happend to me like that

Re: really horrendous upgrade this morning...

Just updated 274 files in my guest Maverick OS.
Had to do a couple of "sudo apt-get -f install" and a couple "dpkg --configure -a"'s to get things sorted out.

Like Snowhog, my video is trapped at 600x800 because of the Xorg incompatibility. When i try to reinstall it my screen turns into a giant pixelated ascii mess where I can make out magnified views of the Dolphin menu structure that I used to run the additions.

                  Seems to be running ok.

                  EDIT - 09/17/10
Just to bring this thread up to date. A few minutes after I finished that successful 274 file update, KPackageKit notifier told me that I had 254 packages ready to update. Running in a guest OS I let it do what I'd never let it do on my main system. When it was done and the reboot notification appeared, I rebooted the guest OS. I logged in and when the desktop began appearing it crashed and threw me back to the login screen... the login screen loop!

I did the usual recovery techniques but the login screen loop wouldn't go away. I wondered if the Maverick daily LiveCD had that problem. I burned the 9/15/10 daily on a CDROM and booted into it from my guestOS, and replaced the previous guestOS Maverick. When I rebooted it and attempted a login I discovered that it, too, had the login screen loop.

So, I am going to continue to try successive daily LiveCDs until one works, and then I continue testing the updates.

Fixed the desktop. kde-workspace-bin failed to install. Installed that and everything seems to work except that the font change I was seeing on the netbook is also happening on the desktop PC.

                    But - it works.

This is why I always recommend updating using apt-get when running development versions, up to the rc stage generally. Big updates can happen, which can lead to some mirrors not quite up to speed, and apt will give you more info that can help you decide to wait or not.

For today's updates I ran muon first just to see what it wanted to update and ran the update with apt. I really want muon to succeed, though.

When I got home from the office yesterday I decided to see if startkde was even on my system - it wasn't. A quick synaptic search showed that kde-workspace-bin wasn't installed - I ticked the box, hit the go button and everything straightened right out.

On a side note LXDE is rapidly becoming my favorite lightweight DE.

Although I agree Muon looks better every day I'm also quite happy with the rarely mentioned Adept.

Ran the updates on 10.10 on my virtual machine last night. came up with over 360 updates.

I was dumb and used Kpackagekit to install them.

The interface was nice, but it definitely broke something.

Now when I try to log in, the screen flashes, I see some text, then goes back to the GUI logon screen.

or it will just sit there with "Ubuntu 10.10" on the screen and nothing more.

Should have taken the previous posters' advice about using the command line to upgrade.

How do I bypass the GUI so I can log on using the command line?

Easiest way to do it is hit the red button on the kdm login screen and select console login - or you can select recovery mode from the grub menu.
