Lancelot delay

I have used Lancelot for a long time and now in Maverick I am getting a almost 2 second delay or really a black screen before the menu comes up. The default menu works great. Never had this before the X upgrade and I got crashed by the nvida drivers. I now have Maverick running with the Nov?(default) video driver. Could that be the problem? Looks like it will be some time before I can get the nvida drivers working again. I am not smart enough to figure out how to make it work. Tried and failed several times.

Most likely your nvidia driver is the cause of the problem.
I'm also using Lancelot and it works fine - I don't have any such issues using the radeon driver.

Maybe I should get a new video card that is not nvida. I have had nothing but trouble ever sense I put this video card in. Always had ATI cards before. I purchased the nvida because people said they worked better with linux. That has not been my experience so far.

Rather than investing more money in another video card, why not start a thread outlining your issues with your current card and what steps you've attempted to get it working?

Nvidia cards have always worked more reliably than ATI products in my experience.

Another bit of advice - if you're not adept at video configuration then why are you using a beta version OS? You might consider using a stable release and stable drivers.

The fairy tales about the oh-so-great nvidia support are just that - fairy tales.
Also, I've heard no good things about the reliability of nvidia cards from any of my friends. Three of them had to return their cards due to overheating - a very common issue, as nvidia cards generally run very hot. During the last nvidia meltdown crisis, nvidia played foul and tried to blame Oems and customers for it (also that fould play is not uncommon for nvidia)

Apple has now switched to Ati graphics chips because of the poor quality and reliability of nvidia chips:

I've been using the Ati drivers since I switched to Linux and never had any problems with them with my Radeon 4870.
On Lucid I'm using the latest fglrx driver to play games on Wine, and it works fine.
On Maverick I'm using the opensource Radeon driver, which is also fine.

Ati is putting much more work into driver development than nvidia. They've released detailled specs for their hardware and are actively helping development of the opensource driver.
nvidia never has released any specs for their cards, and doesn't intend to either. Because of that, the opensource driver for nvidia has to be written by reverse engineering.

If you don't have high requirements, you could e.g. get a Radeon 4670 - while it's not the newest card anymore, you can get it relatively cheap by now for £50:

I have only ever owned 2 nvidia and I had almost no trouble with the first one until a power surge wiped the entire computer. When I rebuilt the computer I purchased a new (at that time) 9600 I have now. First I could never remember all the issues I have had with the card and if I could it would be to long to be of any use. I have never been able to recover from a black screen, I usually just reinstall a release I know works on my computer. In the case of Maverick alpha1 is the only one that will install and I can login and that includes the beta. As far why I do this, I just like to try to improve my skill level in something I can play around with. I have a working version of 10.04 that I use when needed. To be fair the nvidia drivers will not install in 10.04 at all. I get a black screen as well so using a stable version did not work for me. I have 9.10 also installed with the nvidia drivers fully updated and working perfectly with this same card. I started have trouble with nvidia in 10.04 but the Maverick alpha1 worked perfectly until the X upgrade and I get black screen. The default driver works but no 3D and I don't use that much any way.

You really should start a new thread or rename this one, but - you say that the nvidia drivers won't install? Then the problem lies somewhere else with your system. Unless you mean they install, but won't activate or you can't get it to work properly - that's an entirely different matter.

You haven't really divulged much detail; are you installing the drivers in the repository or downloading from nvidia? Have you tried jockey? Have you tried the VDPAU repository?
