fwiw - I got it yesterday on Arch and haven't noticed any difference...
Hang on, amarok just crashed
Amarok isn't KDE4

The beta is released now so the 4.5.1 packages should be here pretty soon.
I wonder though, both the backports and kubuntu updates PPA's have KDE 4.5.x packages, what is the difference between these PPA's and which is the right one to use?
the kubuntu-updates ppa contains KDE 4.4.5, the latest minor point release for Lucid's default KDE (4.4.x)
The kubuntu-backports ppa contains packages backported from Maverick back down to Lucid - usually the next major point-release of KDE, currently 4.5.0 for Lucid
4.5.1 will hit the backports ppa for Lucid soon, after maverick's packages are done building and sent out to the official repos (going on now actually)
Now as we are in the maverick meercat forum we should assume that this is waht we are talking about in here, and in that case 4.5.1 in 10.04 needs no ppa repo
now for other releases, check out my now-aging (but still accurate) blog post on this
Kde 4.5.1 has arrived finally, updating to it now
Qt is also being updated from 4.7 Beta 2 to RC 1.

Well after all the waiting... ALL the kwin related problems are still there after the upgrade, still unusable really
Though at least dolphin doesn't crash anymore
You inventoried the entire list of KDE 4.5.1 apps and features?
For me, it has been running perfectly since I installed it this morning.
I would wager that for the majority of KDE 4.5 users it will run just fine.

All the KWIN related problems:
Kwin crashing frequently with desktop effects enabled.
Changing options in system settings crashing the window manager on clicking "Apply"
Window thumbnails and present windows not displaying correctly (as if brightness turned too high).
When using themes that use kwin shadows (ie not oxygen), shadows acting strangely, artifacts etc.
Now dolphin is not crashing all my kde 4.5.x problems are related to kwin.
If I run compiz everything is fine but if using KDE I would rather be using kwin.
I have no doubt the majority of people won't have problems, just as I had no problems with 4.4.x
I have read bug reports and mailing lists about the exact issues I'm having and it seems directly related to certain intel cards.

Yeah, I get the same error and then I go back to the login window after the crash... Whenever I change the refresh rate, the same thing happens once again... If I press alt + ctrl + Fwhatever at the login window I only get a weird half sky blue half black screen and no tty...
Multibooting: Kubuntu Noble 24.04 Before: Jammy 22.04, Focal 20.04, Precise 12.04 Xenial 16.04 and Bionic 18.04
Win XP, 7 & 10 sadly Using Linux since June, 2008
Yea it's all the more frustrating because two older and much slower computers in the house (1 with nvidia and 1 with intel) work fine with 4.5.1 yet my much faster and more modern comp runs like a pig with arthritis and crashes all the time.
Unless I run compiz instead of kwin then it runs great.
It seems the kwin crashing is related to "dbus improvements" but how to fix it? No clue here. On my suse install I installed a patched dbus from a dev/users repository. Still staying with compiz I like having options. IceWM is what I switch to for running games ect... to free up the resources. Probably not necessary but... makes me feel better.
I didn't have stability problems but this new dBus makes things snappier.
