RESOLVED: Where do I find Adobe (or any other) pdf plugin for Firefox?

It seems to change all the time. I tried the method at

but it can't find either acroread-plugins or acroread-escript.

Also, what to do for Acroread on 64-bit Kubuntu?

On principle, I wouldn't follow instructions from any 3 year old threads unless I was very sure it still applied.

What is it you're trying to accomplish, view on-line pdfs in a browser window?

Yes, I want to view on-line pdf files in a browser window -- or something else -- but without being obliged to download them to disk and then read them with acroread. If there's a way to say "open the on-line pdf file in a separate application window", that's ok too.

I realized the page was too old,but was not sure what else to do. I have installed acroread from the Adobe site. But it doesn't make a plugin.

Thanks for the suggestions. However, I cannot find anywhere on the pdfdownload pages where they say it works for Linux or for 64bits. Does it?

As for the Mozillazine article, it leads to a number of things, like 32 vs 64 bits, or nspluginwrapper. Is that what you are suggesting?

Can't speak for 64-bit Kubuntu - I have a 32-bit CPU - but I do have FireFox installed here (version 3.6.10) and clicking on a .pdf file/link results in FF asking me "What should Firefox do with this file?" with Open with checked by default, and Okular being the default application. Works perfectly.

I'd try it, but I can't get there. Don't remember just how I got to this state, but now, if I click on a pdf file in Firefox, the result is difficult to describe. I just get a mostly blank screen with a few seemingly random bunches of characters scattered around. In brief, it does not work.

If I check aboutlugins, I see that I have Adobe Reader 8.0 and Adobe Reader 9.3!

I have now removed the acroread package and now Adobe Reader 9.3 is gone, but .8.0 is still there and it still does not work.

How do I get myself into such a mess? Sigh.

Eureka! I found that in Edit>Preferences>Applications you can choose to use Okular to open a pdf file. Works great, as you said.

Okular 64-bit works perfectly fine for me as well.
