Want to go for Kubuntu but ....

    Hi there,

I want to go for Kubuntu but I would like to know few things before doing the big step:
    1. Is there any tool on the live CD to check that all my hardware is compliant with Kubuntu ?
    2. I am using Twonkey Media server on Windows, is there an equivalent in Kubuntu ?
    3. I would like to convert my Outlook data file (mainly archived emails), any tool ?
    4. Is there any tool to run a Windows session within Kubuntu ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Philippe.

No need. If you get a graphical desktop and the correct resolution, then the GPU and driver are being used. If you are able to connect to the Internet, then your network card is being recognized and setup correctly. If you have working sound, then your sound card is being recognized and setup correctly. If your printer works, then it is being recognized and setup correctly.

Yes. Will they work on your rig? Maybe, maybe not.
    3. I would like to convert my Outlook data file (mainly archived emails), any tool ?
Not sure on that. You can always 'export' your Outlook email to a file (comma separated DOS).
    4. Is there any tool to run a Windows session within Kubuntu ?
VMs (Virtual Machines) of which there are two popular ones: VirtualBox and VMware Player.

      Welcome to Kubuntu, Philippe!

What SnowHog said, and: When you install Windows as a guest OS inside of VirtualBox, for example, Linux will protect your guest OS from hackers trying to get in through the ports, but it can't protect Windows from itself. If you use IE to browse or you visit and/or download files from dubious sources (like porn sites) all bets are off. This last weekend a friend of mine had his RoadRunner account suspended for 24 hours because his Windows guest OS was sending out spam. While using Yahoo Chat he got infected. IRC and chat channels are notorious for serving up infectious agents. His Linux Host was clean. He is going to install Kubuntu and use empathy.

as suggested by snowhog ur most of hardware should work out of box and there wont be any need to install hardware.but if you are installing on laptop with wifi. first you need to connect to wired net.
        and then: K->Applications->System->Hardware Drivers
and check if driver for wifi is available. otherwise there are different ways to get wifi working. u will find it in this forum.

        welcome to KFN.

If some hardware doesn't work from the liveCD that doesn't necessarily mean it won;t work with kubuntu - you might want to do some web searching on specific hardware with linux.
          2. I am using Twonkey Media server on Windows, is there an equivalent in Kubuntu ?
There is a lunix version of twonkyserver available on the Twonky download page. I did not however, see any client software.
          3. I would like to convert my Outlook data file (mainly archived emails), any tool ?
This will depend heavily on which email program you choose. Linux is all about choice - thunderbird is probably the most commonly used linux email program and there is also a windows version of it.
          4. Is there any tool to run a Windows session within Kubuntu ?
The only things a VM is not really suited for are heavily graphic intensive games. Almost anything else will run fine in a VM.

You might consider attempting a dual-boot install to test things out before diving into linux head first!
