Dual Monitor w/ Laptop and KDE

I'm having trouble getting KDE to find a dual monitor setup.

I have the default laptop monitor and an external VGA monitor. If I start the computer with the external monitor plugged in I see post/boot/etc on both screens until X starts. Then the display shows on the external monitor only.

If I leave the external monitor unplugged everything boots normally on the default monitor.

If I plug in the external monitor after I've logged in KDE can't find it.

If I open the display settings I see the following message:

This module is only for configuring systems with a single desktop spread across multiple monitors. You do not appear to have this configuration.

I'm running Kubuntu 10.04.4 LTS on an Acer Aspire 7551G-7606 with an ATI 6760 video card.

Any suggestions on how I can make KDE find the second monitor?

Sounds to me like your video card in your laptop doesn't support dual monitors - or at least not as you have it configured.

If you open a terminal and type xrandr -q you should see a list of uasable monitors. Also, read your /var/log/Xorg.0.log after booting up to see what it detects.
