    Kubuntu Next PPA

    https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/next

Starting to get some packages (for Utopic). Installing stuff does not seem to change anything, but it probably isn't fully baked.

    Updated:

See Rog132's posts 8 and 10, pointing out the dependency on the Landing PPA 005. As of 7/15/2014, you need both for a successful install of Plasma Next on Utopic.

I had better luck following the directions here (http://techbase.kde.org/Getting_Star...Project_Neon_5) on a 14.04 VM.

Wondering if anyone has added the Kubuntu Next ppa to a Utopic install and ended up with a working system.

Per Rog132's link, Riddell says the Next ppa is ready for action -- with the usual disclaimers about this being early, early of course.

I did a fresh Utopic install in a VM. Added the Next ppa and updated. Aptitude full-upgrade was not happy - saying there where a lot of conflicts.

I made a snapshot, then went ahead with a full-upgrade. Sddm did not install because of a conflict with lightdm. Rebooted anyway and it stalled at the Kubuntu splash screen.

Removed lightdm and installed sddm. That let more packages from Next be installed. Rebooting again stalled at the splash screen. Switched to a terminal and tried startx. Got the "dbus error - can you call qdbus" message. startkde complained about qtpaths not being able to exec /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt4/bin/qdbus.

I tried some googled suggestions for modifying startkde, but no luck.

I am enjoying playing with a Neon5 install in a VM. Liking Breeze and the new QML widgets a lot.

Our member NoWorries has been chronicling his experiences with Kubuntu next in his excellent thread Living on the Edge with KDE Project Neon.

I'm following NoWorries' thread, and also have Neon installed in a vm. I'm sure they are 99% the same, but Kubuntu Next is Utopic only and replaces 'Plasma 1', while the Neon ppas are Trusty and install to /opt, leaving Plasma 1 intact.

I'm not 100% sure if the Landing PPA 005 is still needed but it is still mentioned:

                      Perfect, thanks.

I never thought to expand the Technical Details, or knew that a ppa could have a dependency like that.

Apparently Landing PPA 05 is needed, because the upgrade worked exactly as you outlined after adding both ppas.

For others playing with Utopic in a Virtualbox VM, the recent update from the Oracle repo lets the Guest Additions build against the 3.16 kernel.
