FAQ: Requesting new packages / new versions / new features

All plans/timetables are subject to revision

The Ubuntu is a commercially sponsored Debian-derived Linux distribution /1/. The Kubuntu is derived from the Ubuntu /2/, /3/.

The Kubuntu is using the KDE desktop /4/. Both the Ubuntu and the Kubuntu are using same six month release cycle /5/. The KDE4 had own six month release cycle /6/. Current KDE releasing is divided to three parts: KDE Frameworks 5, Plasma 5 and KDE applications /13/.

After the six month development phase the Ubuntu is released as the final product. The packages and the iso images will stay as they are released but there can be important security fixes for the packages /7/.

There are also Long Term Support releases (LTS) /8/. The LTS releases could have point releases to get the new iso images.

The Kubuntu is releasing the KDE updates from the PPA repositories /9/,/10/. The KDE update could move to the Ubuntu updates when it has been tested by the PPA users. An exaple, the 4.5.5 for the Kubuntu 10.10 was released first from the PPA /11/ and later moved to the maverick-updates /12/.

    Requesting new features - brainstorms

There are many more ideas than there are developers. The fastes way to implement your idea is to read the documents and make the application and pack it yourself.

The KDE way > KDE Brainstorm: Get Your Ideas Into KDE!:
In an effort to bridge the gap between users and developers, the KDE Community Forums have launched a new initiative to coordinate feature requests. A new "Brainstorm" section has been created in the KDE Community Forums: users are encouraged to post requests there...
The Ubuntu way > Ubuntu Brainstorm:
Ubuntu brainstorm provides a simple way for anyone to contribute ideas for improving Ubuntu. All ideas are voted on by the user community and the most popular ideas are brought to the attention of the development teams...

    Requesting new packages/versions

    > Ubuntu New Packages:
    1. Criteria
    2. Requesting a new package for Ubuntu
    3. Packaging it yourself
    > UbuntuBackports:
...The Backports team believes that the best update policy is a mix of Ubuntu's security-only policy AND providing new versions of some programs. Candidates for version updates are primarily desktop applications, such as your web browser, word processor, IRC client, or IM client...

    How to request new packages

When you need a package backported which is not currently available, create a new bug report in the Backports Product of Launchpad:...

It never pointed to a list, it describes the official-created-by-kubuntu PPA's and what they are for.
Which could use an update I started it 2 1/2 years ago, lol! The info is still accurate.

9 is correct, too though the launchpad search tool there is rather clunky.
No reason to delete anything, really.
